VALDOSTA, Ga. - No. 7 UWF men's tennis (15-4, 8-1 GSC) extended their winning streak to 13 on Monday morning at the VSU Tennis Courts, taking down No. 26 Hawaii Pacific (10-4, 6-1 PacWest) 6-1.
The No. 49-ranked duo of
Sebastian Sotelo and
Tomas Leston started the day with a 6-2 win on court three over Jim Walder and Lennard Richter. Jakub Beran and Mile Matic, at No. 21 in the ITA Doubles Rankings, equalized at No. 1 with their 7-5 win over
Bernardo Costa and
Albin Ekenros. The tiebreaker matchup at No. 2 required such a round to decide doubles, and
Sebastian Rondon and
Diego Duran claimed it for UWF, improving their record to 4-0 in the process, with a 7-6 (7-5) victory over Robin Sanz and Riku Ogasawara.
The Argos began to put this one out of reach from the jump in singles, as Sotelo won 6-1, 6-2 over Beran at No. 2, Duran put away Bruno Johannes 6-1, 6-4 at No. 5 and Leston took down Adam Vasir 6-4, 6-2. The Sharks earned their lone point at the top of the lineup, as Sanz, No. 56 in the ITA Singles Rankings, upset No. 14 Rondon in two 6-4 sets.
Mateo Martinez kept HPU at arm's length in the first three-set matchup of the day with his 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory over Matic. At the No. 3 matchup, Ekenros wrapped up the day's work by pulling out a hard-fought 7-6 (9-7), 7-5 win against Ogasawara.
With Monday's result, the Argos earn their first win in their last four meetings with the Sharks, as well as their first since 2018, after previously winning nine of the first 11 contests between the sides.
UWF finishes its regular season this Saturday as it heads back to Georgia to take on No. 5 Columbus State in a Top 10 clash.
