COLUMBUS, Ga. - No. 7 UWF men's tennis (16-4, 8-1 GSC) wrapped up its regular season with its 14th straight win in a 6-1 decision over No. 5 Columbus State (12-6, 4-1 PBC) at the Walden Tennis Center on Saturday morning. The result is also the Argos' seventh straight win in a ranked matchup and their fifth straight by a margin of five or more points.
Â
The Argos got the day started off right with a doubles sweep. At the top of the lineup,
Albin Ekenros and
Bernardo Costa won 6-3 over Andreas Sandrone and Felix Steen.
Sebastian Sotelo and
Tomas Leston then improved their doubles record to 8-1 as they topped Elias Peter and Benedek Szombathelyi by the same score at court three.
Diego Duran and
Sebastian Rondon then won their sixth consecutive matchup 6-4 over Camilo Cano and Justin Welz.Â
Â
Rondon and Duran got singles play started with easy wins at No. 1 and No. 5, respectively, as the former won 6-1, 6-3 over Welz and the latter won 7-5, 6-1 over Sandrone. Sotelo clinched the win by scoring his team's fourth point as he took down Cano 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5-0). At No. 3, Ekenros claimed a three-set matchup of his own 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 over Daniel Hammond. The Cougars scored their lone point of the contest at No. 4 as Szombathelyi defeated
Mateo Martinez 6-2, 1-6, 6-4. Leston then ensured the day would end on a positive note for the Argos as he took a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 decision over Peter. Â
Â
With the regular season wrapped up, UWF is set to begin the GSC Championship in a week in Montgomery, Ala. The Argos have had the regular season championship and No. 1 seed locked up since they finished their conference slate two weeks ago with a sweep of Delta State. Valdosta State is just behind at the No. 2 position for now with a 7-1 GSC record and one match still left to go, but it cannot overtake UWF thanks to the Argos' defeat of the Blazers last month in a 4-3 thriller.
