UWF Rights the Ship with Hard-Fought Victory

Argos Win 4-3 over Hawaii Pacific, One Match Left in Regular Season

VALDOSTA, Ga. - No. 17 UWF women's tennis (12-9, 7-3 GSC) got back to its winning ways, pulling out a hard-fought 4-3 victory over No. 42 Hawaii Pacific (9-11, 5-3 PacWest) at the VSU Tennis Courts on Monday morning.

Aline Midori Da Silva and Carlota Verdu got things started the right way on court one with a 6-3 win over Sara Hejtmankova and Abigail Wild. Giuliana Sacco and Guadalupe Martinez then did the same on court three against Vera Markovic and Lynn Kader, so that the No. 2 matchup went unfinished.

This match wrapped up in short order as each singles contest was finished in two sets. Martinez staked her team to a 2-0 lead at No. 4 singles with a comfortable 6-1, 6-0 win over Leonie Mueller. The Sharks then stunned the Argos with three straight singles wins at Nos. 1-3, as Wild, No. 36 in the ITA Singles Rankings beat Verdu, Isabel Heupgen took down a nationally ranked opponent in Da Silva and Hejtmankova dispatched Nathalia Mossambani. Down 3-2, it was up to Daud at No. 5 and Sacco at No. 6 to salvage the contest, and they delivered. Sacco defeated Markovic 6-3, 6-2 to tie it up and Daud clinched the Argos' win 6-3, 7-5 over Kader.

With the win, UWF defeats Hawaii Pacific for the first time in three meetings, last winning in 2018 in the national semifinals, and wins just its third match over the Sharks in 11 matches.

The Argos finish up the regular season this Saturday as they go back on the road to take on No. 15 Columbus State.
