COLUMBUS, Ga. - No. 23 UWF women's tennis (12-10, 7-3 GSC) fell behind early in doubles play and couldn't overcome the deficit in a tight 4-3 setback at No. 14 Columbus State (13-6, 5-1 PBC) at the Walden Tennis Center on Saturday morning.
Â
Giuliana Sacco and
Guadalupe Martinez, at No. 3 doubles, started the day with a 6-2 win over Agostina Bigotti and Laura Pesickova. The Lady Cougars came back to claim the opening point, though, as Mariana Ramirez and Nikoline Gullacksen defeated
Carlota Verdu and
Aline Midori Da Silva 6-4 and Yelena Labat and Isadora Oliveira won 6-3 over
Nathalia Mossambani and
Manuela Dejean.Â
Â
At the top of the singles lineup, Verdu took down Ramirez 6-2, 6-3. At No. 2 and No. 3, the first sets went to the tiebreaker round before the sides split the matchups to keep the score tied, as Gullacksen won against Da Silva and Mossambani defeated Pesickova. Martinez then gave the Argos the lead with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Oliveira. However, the Lady Cougars claimed the final two matchups to take the win, as Bigotti won 7-5, 7-5 over Sacco and Labat took down Dejean 6-2, 6-1.Â
Â
UWF heads into the GSC Championship next week in Montgomery, Ala., having already clinched a berth and currently in the No. 5 spot. It remains to be seen if the Argos will stay in that spot, however, as the current No. 3 and No. 6 seeds in the conference, Valdosta State and Lee, finish up the GSC regular season slate with a match tomorrow. Â
