PENSACOLA, Fla. - UWF women's tennis (12-10, 7-3 GSC) travels to Montgomery, Ala., for the GSC Championship this weekend from April 27-29. The Argos enter as the No. 4 seed in the tournament, while ranking No. 22 in the latest ITA National Rankings and No. 10 in the NCAA D2 South Regional Rankings with an 11-8 record in D2 play and 7-7 mark in region. UWF brings in leading singles players
Guadalupe Martinez,
Aline Midori Da Silva and
Carlota Verdu. Martinez, who won back-to-back GSC Player of the Week awards last month, went 16-5 overall and 8-2 in conference play at the three and four positions in singles. She also registered a 13-7 overall doubles record, 7-2 in GSC play, with partners Da Silva and
Giuliana Sacco. For her part, Da Silva brings a 16-6 overall singles mark and a 9-2 GSC record at No. 2, as well as a 12-9 overall doubles record and 7-3 conference mark with Martinez and Verdu. Verdu put up a 7-4 conference record and 9-13 overall mark at the top of the singles lineup with a 13-8 overall doubles record, 7-4 in GSC, with Da Silva,
Luiza Daud and
Manuela Dejean.
Â
Mississippi College, led by second-year head coach Michael Ward, enters the tournament at No. 28 in the ITA Rankings with a 12-6 in-region record. MC is led by Ana Julissa De Mata Rodriguez, who boasts records of 16-0 in singles and 13-5 in doubles. She had an unblemished mark in both singles and doubles until she and Gabrielle Geolier fell 6-3 to Martinez and Da Silva in the Argos' 4-3 win in February. The Choctaws also bring in Emma Roberts, who comes in at No. 74 in the ITA Singles Rankings and owns a 14-5 overall record and 8-2 GSC mark at No. 2 singles with an 11-5 doubles mark with partner Maria Rodriguez. Additionally, Fernanda Cota and Elyangelica Alas are No. 16 in the ITA Doubles Rankings.
Â
The Argos are the higher seed via tiebreaker, as they defeated the Choctaws in Clinton, Miss., two months ago in one of their best performances of the season. UWF swept doubles play and earned huge wins in singles, as
Nathalia Mossambani claimed a tight straight-set battle over Cota, Verdu took a pair of tiebreakers to beat Alas in straight sets as well and Da Silva won the clincher at No. 2 in three sets over Roberts. Though the last three meetings between the teams have been 4-3 results, UWF owns the series 13-0, a favorable outlook for a must-win match if
Derrick Racine's Argonauts are to win their 20th GSC title.Â
