UWF Softball Breaks Single-Season Record, Splits Doubleheader with Lee

Guerriero’s third inning RBI in game one sets team single-season program record.

PENSACOLA, Fla. – A windy day at the UWF Softball Complex resulted in mixed results, as the West Florida Argonauts (34-14, 21-8) split a pair of twin bill games with the visiting Lee Flames (20-24, 14-15), making history in the process.

UWF took game one 7-2 over the Flames with the help of four doubles combined from the batting lineup. In game two, the Argos were down early and came back with a four-run fifth inning, but Lee took the lead back late in the seventh and were able to hang on for the win.

Gianna Guerriero helped the Argos set the program single-season RBI record with her third inning RBI double in game one. The original record of 335 RBI in a season was set by the 2005 UWF softball team and stood for almost 20 seasons. Now, the 2024 team claims the record with 344 and counting.

The Argos are also two runs shy of setting the single-season program runs record, further cementing the historic year West Florida has had at the plate.

Guerriero also had a very productive day in the combined games, going 6-8 (.750) with three runs, two doubles, two RBI and two stolen bases. Her .463 batting average is the third best in the Gulf South Conference.

Montana Young (18-4) pitched another full game in game one, allowing just one earned run and contributing another seven strikeouts in the win. Her 102 strikeouts are top ten in the GSC and lead the Argos.

Madelyn Vasquez knocked home run no. 15 on the season to tie Jessica Ford for the second most on the team. Ford and Vasquez are now tied for third all-time in single-season home runs for UWF program history.

With the doubleheader split, UWF drops to fourth in the conference behind Alabama-Huntsville, Auburn-Montgomery, and Mississippi College. They will have one more game tomorrow before the GSC tournament seeds are finalized.

Game One: UWF 7, LEE 2

Erin Moon lined out to left field, but the sacrifice allowed Guerriero to score to start the scoring for UWF. Both teams stranded runners in the second, but Lee managed to take the lead back when a bases loaded situation churned out an RBI single and another score on a fielding error. UWF managed to get out of the jam and held the score to 1-2.

Guerriero hit the first of her two doubles in game one in the bottom of the third inning. This scored Chelsea Dumas to tie it at 2-2. Guerriero wasn't done on the play, as she advanced to third on an error and scored on the throw.

At 3-2, UWF extended the lead in the fourth with another Guerriero double to the right side, bringing Jessie Baughan in this time. Young continued to deal, forcing Lee to strand nine batters in total for the game.

UWF split the game open with a three-RBI double in the bottom of the fifth by Ford. The ball was hit to the wall with the wind blowing against it, allowing Lee to avoid what would have been the second grand slam of the year for Ford. The Argos shut down the Flames in the final two frames and took game one 7-2.

Game Two: UWF 5, LEE 6

Lee took an early 0-3 lead in the first two innings off multiple singles and a few UWF miscues. In the first, a Flames runner stole second, advanced on a wild pitch, and was brought home by a passed ball. In the second, two different RBI singles advanced runners and put the Argos in trouble early. Hannah harper and the UWF fielders managed to get out of it, but now had a hole to climb out of.

Harper hit an RBI single to the right side in the fourth, scoring Moon. In the fifth, UWF capitalized on Lee mishaps on their way to a four-run inning to take the lead. A wild pitch brought in Chelsea Dumas and brough it to 2-3. Moon reached on a fielder's choice next, allowing Guerriero to score. Finally, Vasquez hit home run no. 15 to score Moon and put the Argos in front 5-3.

Both teams went down scoreless in the sixth, and UWF got in another jam with the bases loaded. An RBI flyout scored one runner, bringing the game within a run at 5-4. The Argos managed to get the Flames down to their final strike with the bases loaded. Lee's Rylie Goodridge took what could have been her last pitch of the game and singled through the left side, driving in two runners and giving the Flames a late 5-6 lead.

The Argos could only manage one runner on base in the final frame and dropped game two 5-6.
