Argos Secure Series over Union with Convincing Twin Bill Victories

UWF extends win streak to 11 games, fourth straight conference series win

PENSACOLA, Fla. – West Florida Softball (25-12, 14-6) secured its fourth-straight conference series victory with a pair of doubleheader wins over the visiting Union Bulldogs (22-16, 11-9) at the UWF Softball Complex Friday afternoon.

UWF extends its win streak to eleven straight games after it took game one of the twin bill 8-5 and then dominated game two for a 16-0 run rule in five innings. The Argos are now 24-6 in the series history against Union.

Jessica Ford had a standout performance at the plate for the Argos today, batting 4-6 (.667) with four runs, a double, two home runs and six RBI in the combined effort. She hit two of the five long balls Argo bats launched today, pushing her season total to ten, good enough for third most on the team. The team home run total is now 68 on the year.

Jessie Baughan went 3-4 (.750) with three runs, a home run, and four RBI. Her home run in game one gives her the team lead once again with 13 this season.

UWF had two impressive performances from pitchers Montana Young and Hannah Harper. Young broke her season high for strikeouts with nine against the Bulldogs in game one after she had eight against Shorter last week. Harper pitched her third shutout in a row and threw a season-high six strikeouts in the game two blowout victory while adding three hits, three runs, a triple, and five RBI at the plate.

Game 1: UWF 8, Union 5

Erin Moon hit a solo blast to right field to give the Argos an early lead in game one. Union took the lead right back on an RBI single and a two-RBI double in the bottom of the first. The 3-1 lead would be the only half-inning lead they would have at any point between the two games.

Back-to-back solo home runs from Jessica Ford and Chelsea Dumas in the second inning tied the game back at 3-3. Gianna Guerriero tripled shortly after and managed to advance to home on a wild pitch to take a 4-3 lead.

Union tied the game in the top of the third on a solo home run. Hannah Harper broke the 4-4 deadlock in the bottom of the third on an RBI triple that scored Madelyn Vasquez and ended with Harper taking home on a throwing error. Both teams were blanked in the fourth until Union struck once again on a solo home run to left field, 6-5.

Ford put the game out of reach for Union when she hit her second home run of the day to left center, driving in two RBI in the process. Union placed two on base and had the tying run at the plate in the seventh but Young and the Argos infield held on for the third out to secure the game one win.

Game 2: UWF 16, Union 0 / 5 inn.

West Florida exploded out of the gate with a seven-run first inning. Harper brought in Vasquez and Moon on a two-RBI single to start things off. Union got into trouble with a few walks and a hit-by-pitch, walking Jessie Baughan for the third Argo run of the inning.

Ford pushed the lead from 3-0 to 6-0 on a three-RBI double. Ford got home a couple plays later when Chelsea Dumas bunted and advanced to second on the throw, drawing attention away from home. 7-0 was the score after the first inning.

Both teams failed to add any in the second, but UWF outdid their scoring from the first inning with an eight-run third. Guerriero began the second volley with a two-RBI double down the right side to score Ford and Baughan. A fielder's choice scored Chelsea Dumas and brought Brice aboard. She scored on a two-RBI single from Harper along with Guerriero. Finally, Baughan launched a three RBI home run to center to blow the game open to 15-0 UWF.

West Florida added one final run in the fourth when Guerriero stole third base and scored on an error from Union unearned. At 16-0, UWF forced the Bulldogs to their last three outs where they grounded out in order and triggered the fifth inning run rule in favor of the Argos.
