PENSACOLA, Fla. – UWF once again relied on its power hitting to pull out its twelfth-straight win and fourth straight conference series sweep.
Jessie Baughan launched her second home run of the series out over the left center wall to walk it off in the ninth inning as UWF (26-12, 15-6) won an extra innings pitcher's duel against the Union Bulldogs (22-17, 11-10).
UWF is now 25-6 all-time against the Union Bulldogs. The Argos move up to a tie for second place in the Gulf South Conference standings with Alabama-Huntsville. It is the second walk-off victory for UWF this season (March 2 vs Alabama-Huntsville).
Baughan leads UWF with 14 home runs in 2024, tied for fourth most in the GSC. Her 1.440 on base + slugging is also the fourth best total in the conference. UWF continues to shatter their season record for home runs, now totaling 70 on the season.
It was a defensive showcase for the majority of the game between the Argos and the Bulldogs, with sophomore pitcher
Hannah Harper having another impressive showing. Harper followed up her season high in strikeouts yesterday by breaking it again with seven today and allowing zero earned runs. The sophomore now owns a team-leading 3.96 ERA and hasn't allowed an earned run since March 24.
Jessica Ford hit her third home run of the series to tie up the game in the fifth inning, bringing her total to 11 on the year. The graduate student went 5-9 (.556) with five runs, a double, three home runs and seven RBI in the series against the Bulldogs.
UWF 2, Union 1 / 9 inn.
The first two innings saw both teams strand multiple runners on base as the defenses and pitchers shined. UWF got into trouble in the top of the third inning after committing three errors in four plays. The third error came with bases loaded, allowing a runner to score from third unearned. UWF managed to get out of the bases loaded jam with a 1-2-3 double play to end the half inning down 0-1.
Only one runner was able to get aboard for both teams in the next inning and a half until
Jessica Ford tied the game back up with a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth. Both teams once again stranded runners as Harper and Union's Lainey Baker continued to trade strikeouts.
UWF brought the winning run aboard in the bottom of the seventh when
Chelsea Dumas singled through the left side, but she was caught in an inning-ending double play when
Emma Brice lined out and Union made the throw to second to catch Dumas on an attempted tag up.
The game headed to extras, and both teams went three-up, three-down to begin things in the eighth. Union saw all three batters ground out in the ninth, deferring the opportunity for a walk off to UWF again. With one out and two strikes, Baughan launched a home run to left center to walk it off in the bottom of the ninth and secure the series sweep for UWF.

The Argos hit the road again for a quick trip to Mobile, AL to face the Spring Hill Badgers for a midweek doubleheader. They then turn around and drive north for a weekend road series against Montevallo.
