UWF Baseball Crowned Back-to-Back GSC Champions

The Argos are just the second program to win three GSC titles in four years

OXFORD, Ala. --- The University of West Florida baseball team won the 2024 Gulf South Conference Baseball Championship on Tuesday, capturing back-to-back tournament titles for the first time in program history.

Delta State won the opening game of the day, 9-8, but UWF bounced back in the in necessary game, 7-2, to celebrate its fourth-ever conference tournament trophy. The Argonauts are lowest-seeded team to win the title since 2010, and the first to win back-to-back tournament titles since Delta State did it in 2016 and 2017.

The Argonauts captured their fourth GSC title and will head into their 10th NCAA Regional appearance. They will await to hear their name called in the NCAA Selection Show, streamed on NCAA.com on Sunday, May 12.

For just the second time in GSC history a school won three titles in four seasons. The Argos also won the 2021 and 2023 crowns.

The title is the sixth conference postseason title for the university in 2023-24 and brings the school's all-time total to 123 conference championships.

Game 2
After dropping the opening game, the Argonauts hung up a five-spot in the first and never looked back. Cade Easterbrook—the tournament's Most Outstanding Player—kicked off the scoring pushing Jadon Fryman across with a RBI-double.

The Argos then tallied an insurance run in the second and one in the fourth. They finished with 12 hits from seven batters and had 15 runners left on base. The UWF offense was also highlighted by Darrien McDowell who tied a conference-record with five walks in a single-game, becoming the seventh player in history to accomplish the feat.

Townsend and Moore grabbed their second RBI of the game, both sending Easterbrook home to bring their score total score to seven.

The Statesmen put up a run in the sixth to bring the score to 7-2.

Dilan Lawson pitched a five-inning game and improved to 6-2 on the mound. He threw five strikeouts and held the Statesmen to a single run.

Game 1
UWF fell one run short in the opening match Tuesday morning. Delta State hit five homers that brought all nine runs in.

In the fourth, Trent Jeffcoat hit an RBI double that gave UWF their first lead of the game.

The Argos faced a two-run deficit heading into the ninth frame. Brett Rowell put up a sac fly to bring the score to a one-run difference but dropped shy.

Fryman and Jackson Grabsky were named GSC All-Tournament Team for the second consecutive year with McDowell grabbing first career honor. Easterbrook was named the MOP after tallying 12 hits and contributing to 13 runs batted in throughout the tournament.
