UWF Takes Down Christian Brothers

Argos Hold Second Consecutive Opponent to Under .100, Start Off GSC Play 3-0

PENSACOLA, Fla. - West Florida volleyball (8-5, 3-0 GSC) kicked off GSC play with a 3-0 week by taking down Christian Brothers (4-8, 0-2 GSC) at UWF Field House on Saturday afternoon by a 3-1 score (25-7, 25-20, 22-25, 25-11) with convincing first and final sets.

UWF held its second consecutive opponent under .100 hitting, as the Lady Bucs managed just one frame above that mark. The Argos hit .364 with 54 kills to just 10 errors despite 14 less attacks than CBU. In the first and fourth frames, they committed just one total error with offensive outputs of .579 and .560, respectively.

Kumara Flanagain led the hosts' offense with 14 kills on 27 attacks. Emily Breazeale and Magdalena Vongkasemsiri each scored eight kills with .421 and .400 performances, respectively. Caiden Largent was just behind with seven kills on just 13 swings for a .462 hitting percentage. Delaney Hanowell headed the squad in that category with a .625 on five kills. Jenna Zydlo and Tylah Yeomans each put down three kills on seven swings, and Taylor Teaman and Liberty McLean made good on their lone attack attempts.

Flanagain and Hanowell each assisted three blocks, with Vongkasemsiri and Zydlo each getting two. Gabi Moulton racked up 33 assists. Olivia Kelly had 12 and Meg Brackhan added five. Brackhan headed the defense with 17 digs. Camryn Brooks scooped 12 attacks of her own. Breazeale and Moulton each tallied seven. Annie Monaco added seven and Teaman and Kelly each had three.

The Argos' first big run in the opening frame came with them nursing an 8-4 lead. After a Flanagain kill, her fourth of the match already, Teaman stepped behind the service line. On her first two swings, she perfectly found the right corner behind the Lady Bucs' defense as they tried to call them out. The guests went on to commit three consecutive miscues before a Vongkasemsiri kill capped off a 7-0 run to put UWF up 15-4. The Argos went on to post 4-0 and 5-0 runs to finish off the first set in very short order.

After a quick trade of the lead in the early going of the second frame and a 4-0 run by CBU to tie it back up at nine apiece, an error and a block by Vongkasemsiri and Moulton gave UWF the lead for good in the set. Breazeale helped her team get a leg up with back-to-back kills to respond after a CBU kill and then two more around a Buc error after the visitors had narrowed it once again by scoring three in a row. Kelly and Vongkasemsiri split a block for point 23 and Zydlo provided a kill to put her team up 2-0.

After keeping things close in Set 2, the Lady Bucs finished the flipping of the script in the third as they took an early 3-0 advantage. With a 4-0 run to retake the lead after a 5-0 UWF span, CBU kept the home team at arm's length to win a set over the Argos for the first time since 2017.

It appeared that UWF might be pushed to a fifth as the Bucs then jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the fourth. The Argos tied it back up, however, with two Flanagain kills and a pair of errors and had an answer for every CBU push thereafter, taking their first lead of the frame with another 4-0 run helped by kills from Largent and Vongkasemsiri and Teaman's third ace.

After the teams traded points, the Argos put their foot firmly on the accelerator and didn't let up until they had scored nine straight points and were two away from set point. Flanagain continued her standout afternoon with two kills and a block assist. Hanowell scored on a kill and two block assists while Brooks put down the other offensive point of the span. The Lady Bucs would score once more at this juncture, but McLean and Largent called game with kills off Moulton assists for the final points of the day.

UWF heads to Alabama for its next three matches, starting with a date at Montevallo on Friday, October 4, at 6 pm.
