UWF Falls Short at Home Against Union

Box Score PENSACOLA, Fla. - Union held off UWF in the final seconds for a 82-78 victory on Saturday night at the UWF Field House.

The Argos (4-11, 3-6 in Gulf South Conference) took a nine-point lead with 7:12 remaining when Elijah Wyche followed his own miss with a putback shot near the rim. From that point, however, the Bulldogs seized control.

Union answered with a 13-3 run to take a 65-64 lead when Parker Applegate converted a pair of free throws. The Bulldogs (8-4, 4-5) never trailed again.

Applegate, a 6-foot-8 sophomore forward, led all scorers with 23 points. He made two more free throws to push Union to a 67-64 lead, then finished off a 3-point play while fouled to push the Bulldogs to a 73-66 lead with 56.7 seconds remaining.

The Argos valiantly had a chance to tie the game after UWF's Ryan Payne hit a 3-point shot with 8.4 seconds left, cutting Union's lead to 80-77.

The Argos' defense then forced a 5-second violation on the inbound attempt. Union's Jeremiah Littlepage fouled UWF's Kyle McElroy with 6.2 seconds remaining, which prevented him from taking or setting up a tying 3-point attempt.

McElroy made one of the free throws and Littlepage was fouled on the rebound with 4.5 seconds left. He made both attempts to seal the game.

It became another tough loss for the Argos, who also led in the second half of Thursday's loss against Christian Brothers in a game that followed two UWF road wins.

On Saturday, the Argos led 37-33 at halftime and opened an 11-point lead when Wyche caught a lob pass from Ja'Ron Briggs Jr. and finished the slam dunk with 9:50 remaining. It forced Union to call a timeout and make defensive adjustments.

Shay Davis produced a team high 20 points for UWF and was among five Argos in double figures. Le'Tarion White had 16 points and seven rebounds for the Argos, followed by Briggs with 12 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Wyche had 10 points and seven rebounds, Xavier Glenn had 10 points.

The first half went back-and-forth with Union having the largest lead at six points, before the Argos came back for the halftime lead.

The Argos will next travel to face Auburn-Montgomery on Thursday in Montgomery, Ala., followed by a game Jan. 18 against Montevallo.
