MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of West Florida men's basketball team was able to close out a tight game in the second half to beat Montevallo on the road at the Central State Bank Arena 68-64.
Senior guard
Eli Brown had back-to-back baskets that proved to be timely shots for the Argos. With five minutes left in the game, Brown hit a jumper to put UWF up four points. On his next shot, Brown hit a 3-pointer to put the Argos up five with 3:36 remaining. Brown finished with his best offensive performance of the season, scoring 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting, including four made triples.
Montevallo missed four 3-pointers down the stretch in the final minute of play and UWF was able to hit 4-of-6 free throws to help close out the game.
Elijah Wyche and
Zondrick Garrett each posted double-doubles and joined Brown in scoring double figures. Wyche had 15 points, 11 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and a block. Garrett scored 10 points with 13 rebounds, 5 blocks and an assist.
UWF built a large first half lead that grew to 16 points with just a minute left in the first half. The Falcons cut the lead to 11 right before halftime.
Neither team had great shooting days, but the Argos capitalized in the first half by drilling six shots from beyond the arc. Montevallo was 24-of-65 (36.9%) from the field in the game and just 5-of-27 (18.5%). UWF was 22-of-59 (37.3%) and 7-of-24 (29.2%) from three.
