Fell Gets 100th Career Tournament Win; Ekelund Wins at Copperhead Championship

PALM HARBOR, Fla. – Head men's golf coach Steve Fell hit a milestone on Tuesday afternoon that most golf coaches will never achieve. Fell and his No. 1 ranked Argos won the Copperhead Invitational which marked Fell's 100th tournament title in his 30-year coaching career.

The Argos didn't just win the tournament held at Innisbrook Golf Resort to help Fell to No. 100, they dominated the entire field. West Florida finished with a team score of 841 (-11) which was 11 strokes better than second place finisher Grand Valley State. The Argos shot five under, four under and two under, respectively.

Leading the way was Per Ekelund who saved his best round for last to win the tournament. Ekelund shot even par in rounds one and two before turning in a five under, 66 in the final round to win by one stroke. The junior closed out his round with a birdie on hole No. 1 to seal the victory.

Teammate TJ Thompson was leading the tournament at -5 entering the final hole, but a bogey on No. 18 dropped Thompson back to a second-place finish behind Ekelund. Thompson was sensational throughout the entire tournament as he carded just one bogey in the first 36 holes. The junior had a spotless first round on his way to a 67 (-4).

UWF had seven players enter the tournament with two playing as individuals. Jack Burbee finished even and recorded a 69 (-2) in the second round of action.

As a team the Argos combined for a leading 45 birdies over the 54 holes.

Fell will be looking to break the century mark in career tournament titles next week in the Argos' final tournament of the fall season. UWF will play on Oct. 20 and 21 at the Golfweek Division II Invitational in Fripp Island, S.C. at Ocean Creek Golf Course.
