MOBILE, Ala. – The University of West Florida men's and women's tennis teams wrapped up the fall portion of their schedule over the weekend at the Gulf South Conference Fall Invitational. The Argos had six winners between singles and doubles play.
Guadalupe Martinez highlighted the event for the Argos, winning the singles final in the first flight. Martinez opened the round of 16 with a dominating 6-0, 6-1 win over Valerie Neumann of Christian Brothers. Martinez then defeated Valentia Mutilba of West Alabama in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. The senior advanced to the semifinals getting the win over Mississippi College's Rocio Martinez Azcarraga, 6-4, 6-3 and then in the final Martinez had another impressive performance with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Melissa Yakup Pour of AUM.
In other singles play, the UWF men's team produced three winners.
Vicente Couto defeated Francisco Guimaraes in a match tiebreaker (6-4, 3-6, 10-7) to win the flight two final.
Samuel Vidales won flight four with a controlling win over Simon Luigs, 6-0, 6-4.
Lazaro Martins walked away with the finals win in flight 5 with a two set win (6-4, 6-1) over Joan Mateu Ramis Pascual.
Sebastian Rondon advanced to the flight one finals but fell in a tightly contested match, 6-4, 6-4.
In addition to Martinez's win,
Rachel Ames won the final in flight four for the women. Ames took the match tiebreaker 10-3 after coming back from losing the first set 0-6 and then winning second set 6-2.
In doubles play, UWF won flight three with John David Mccrory and Martins winning 6-4.
The Argos men's team will be back in action on Feb. 13 at the ITA Indoor Team Nationals and the women will start back up on Feb. 7 on the road against South Alabama.
