LAKELAND, Fla. – In their first tournament of the spring season the University of West Florida men's golf team dominated the competition to win the Matlock Collegiate Classic with a team score of 27-under par. The tournament was hosted by Florida Southern at the Lone Palms Golf Club.
The nationally ranked Argos who are currently No. 5 in NCAA Division II won the classic by 11 strokes with No. 27 Florida Southern placing second at -16. Four of the top 25 teams in the country participated in the Matlock Collegiate Classic.
The Argos were tied with Florida Southern and CSU Monterey Bay following the first round, but the team pulled away in the second round with a team score of 275 (-13). West Florida extended the lead even more in the third round with a 278 (-10). The team had the two lowest round scores out of any team in the tournament.
UWF had four players shoot even or under par for the tournament. Leading the way was
Per Ekelund at 11-under. He finished second overall. Ekelund's best score came in the second round when the sophomore shot an eight-under, 64. Ekelund had just one bogey in the round on 18. He eagled on hole No. 2 and hole No. 11.
Following up Ekelund was
Fabian Wennerlof in third place with a nine-under, 207. The senior shot -2, -5, and -2 over his three rounds.
Eddie Lee placed 11
th overall with a 213 (-3). After a slow start in the first round where Lee shot three-over the junior responded with a one-under and final round five-under.
TJ Thompson shot even for the tournament and placed tied for 13
th.
The Argos will travel to the Las Vegas Desert Classic for their next competition on March 2-4 at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nev.
