Men’s Tennis Sweeps Season Opener Versus Montevallo

Argos Improve to 11-0 All-Time Against the Falcons

PENSACOLA, Fla. - UWF men's tennis (1-0, 1-0 GSC) opened its 2025 season in style with a 7-0 win over Montevallo (0-2, 0-2 GSC) on Saturday afternoon at Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex. The Argos remain undefeated in all 11 meetings against the conference rival since the latter restarted the program in 2017.

The No. 1 duo, Diego Duran and Sebastian Rondon, ranked No. 2 in all of DII in the ITA Preseason Rankings, doing their thing and defeating Dylan Kamel and Luiz Brandao 6-2. UWF sealed the doubles point in short order as Tomas Leston and Sebastian Sotelo took down Gabriel Variano and Guilherme Gracioli 6-3. The Falcons went on to earn their lone win of the day on court two as Paul Sobich and Simon Luigs utilized the tiebreaker to narrowly edge out Miguel Cabrera and Denilso Martinez 7-6 (7-5).

That would be the only highlight of the day for the visitors, as each of the six singles matchups were decided in two frames apiece without requiring a tiebreaker. Sotelo was the first to wrap up with a pair of 6-1 wins over Leonidas Lazarides. Albin Ekenros then defeated Ryoto Nakajima 6-1, 6-2 before Cabrera picked up his first win as an Argo 6-2, 6-1 on court one over Sobich. At the bottom of the lineup, Leston won 6-0, 6-3 over Luigs before Rondon followed suit with a 6-1, 6-3 win against Brandao at the No. 2 position. The closest contest was at No. 4 between Duran and Gracioli, before it was eventually put away 6-4, 7-5 to finish off the sweep.

The Argos will take the momentum from the win into the ITA DII Indoor Championship next week in Indianapolis, where they will open their slate in the First Round nightcap on Friday, Feb. 14 at 5:30 pm ET/4:30 pm CT. 7-seed UWF takes on 2-seed and 2024 national runner-up Flagler, who just dominated No. 13 Florida Southern on the road to open its season.
