PENSACOLA, Fla. - UWF women's tennis (1-1, 1-0 GSC) got its first entry in the win column of 2025 via sweep in its GSC opener against Montevallo (1-1, 1-1 GSC) on Saturday afternoon at Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex. The win is the program's 12th all-time against the Falcons in as many meetings.
In a foreshadowing of what was to come later in the day, the Argos came up with a clean sweep in doubles play.
Guadalupe Martinez and
Aline Midori Da Silva started things off with a 6-2 win over Elena Ondobo and Latizia Bojara on court three, and
Luiza Daud and
Nathalia Mossambani followed suit with a 6-3 defeat of Klara Podskubkova and Claire Jaramba one court over. At No. 1,
Giuliana Sacco and
Sandra Recuenco had a tougher draw, requiring a tiebreaker before comfortably taking the matchup against Greta Vagnini and Johanna Kullman 7-6 (7-0).
In singles, the UWF rackets continued to mow down the Falcons. In the first GSC match of her career,
Alberte Joergensen had the easiest time on court five with a 6-0, 6-1 win over London Breedlove. At No. 4, Mossambani won 6-3, 6-2 over Kullman. Two courts up, Midori Da Silva defeated Jaramba 6-4, 6-2 before Recuenco took her matchup against Podskubkova 6-4, 6-3. The first singles match to go to a tiebreaker was on the last court, as Sacco steadily pulled away from Erika Freire to win 7-6 (7-2), 6-2. With the match already locked up, Martinez and Ondobo locked into a duel on court three. After Martinez took the first set 6-4, Ondobo won the first and only set for Montevallo by a hair in the second 7-6 (9-7). After going to the tiebreaker round once more, Martinez ultimately got the last push to pull away 7-6 (10-8) and seal the sweep.
The Argos are off for almost two weeks, when they travel to Memphis, Tenn., to take on Southern Arkansas in a neutral site match on Friday, the 21st, at 10 am before their first GSC road match versus Christian Brothers the next morning.
