VALDOSTA, Ga. - No. 1 UWF men's tennis (11-1, 3-1 GSC) saw its 11-match winning streak come to a difficult end at No. 6 Valdosta State (7-0, 2-0 GSC) on Friday afternoon.
Arthur Bord and Edgar Destouet topped
Albin Ekenros and
Miguel Cabrera at No. 2 doubles, but
Sebastian Sotelo and
Tomas Leston lived up to their new No. 19 rank in the ITA Doubles Rankings with a 7-5 win over Jan Skerbatis and Boruch Skierkier. The doubles point came down to a top-ten battle on the first court that advanced to the tiebreaker, where No. 6 Takeshi Taco and Xaveam Van Wijk pulled out a narrow defeat of No. 4
Diego Duran and
Sebastian Rondon 7-6 (7-5).
Leading 1-0, a top-30 matchup on court three of singles also went the way of the Blazers as No. 23 Destouet won 6-4, 6-1 over No. 29 Duran. No. 16 Rondon scratched a point back with a huge upset win at No. 2 over No. 5 Skierkier 6-4, 6-3 before Sotelo, now ranked No. 35, tied the match with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Jerome Iaconi. At the bottom of the lineup, Julien Doitteau got his team the lead back for good with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 over another newly ranked Argo in
Alex Maulouet. Fittingly, at the top of the lineup, it was a matchup of top-ten players as the top-ranked singles player in the nation in Taco claimed a huge win over No. 6 Cabrera 6-3, 7-6 (7-4). With the win clinched, Skerbatis came back from a 6-4 loss in set one to Ekenros and narrowly claimed the last two frames via the tiebreaker by scores of 7-5 and 7-4 to truly bring this one down to the wire.
