VALDOSTA, Ga. - No. 10 UWF women's tennis (12-7, 5-3 GSC) responded to a tough loss at Auburn Montgomery with a 7-0 dispatching of Tampa (2-14, 0-8 SSC) in South Region action early Saturday. The Argos got revenge on the Spartans for their loss this time last season in the same event in Valdosta, which was the first meeting between the programs.
Â
The Argos got off to a fast start, as
Guadalupe Martinez and
Aline Midori Da Silva won 6-1 on court three over Regina Davalos and Sophie Wagner. The GSC side clinched the point shortly thereafter as
Luiza Daud and
Nathalia Mossambani finished off a 6-3 battle against Ida Axelsson and Alexandra Chebli. The top doubles team, ranked No. 6 in all of DII, of
Sandra Recuenco and
Carlota Verdu then outlasted Nicole Cierniak and Sophia Gutkowski via tiebreaker 7-6 (7-5). That score would be the closest the Spartans stayed within reach of the Argos.Â
Â
Daud started things off in singles with a win on the bottom court again as she made quick work of Davalos in a 6-0, 6-1 victory. Recuenco followed on court two with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Axelsson. Verdu clinched the win at the top of the lineup with her 7-5, 6-1 final to make her 2-0 against Cierniak today. Two courts down, Midori Da Silva easily pulled away from Gutkowski with a 6-2, 6-0 victory as Martinez did almost the same one spot down from that in a 6-2, 6-1 result over Chebli. Mossambani finished off the clean sweep with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Wagner in a close contest for this day.
Â
The Argos remain in Valdosta for another match tomorrow at 10 am ET/9 am CT against No. 34 Florida Southern.
