MONTGOMERY, Ala. - No. 1 West Florida men's tennis (18-1, 7-1 GSC) wrapped up conference play the same way it began - with a sweep of a GSC opponent that has a bird of prey as its mascot. The Argos left the AUM Tennis Complex with a resounding 7-0 defeat of the Warhawks (6-7, 2-3 GSC) on Wednesday afternoon, their seventh win by that margin this season.
The Argos continued to live up to their team, singles and doubles rankings.
Miguel Cabrera and
Bernardo Costa got things started with a 6-2 result at No. 3 doubles over Mark Nawa and Augustin Wallert.
Sebastian Sotelo and
Denilso Martinez followed one court up with a 6-3 win against Raphael Pertusier and Lucas Rosvall. With the point already clinched, the No. 3-ranked doubles team in DII in
Sebastian Rondon and
Diego Duran were given cushion in their ranked matchup at the top of the lineup but refused to take it as they pulled out a narrow 7-6 (9-7) result over the upset-minded No. 26-ranked duo of Giuseppe Bonaiuti and Jami Savolainen.
At the bottom of the singles lineup, Martinez started things off by sealing his undefeated day with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Nawa. The No. 11-ranked DII singles player in Rondon followed by doing so himself in taking a pair of 6-3 sets on court two over Savolainen. One court down, it was No. 39 Sotelo's turn in nearly sweeping Pertusier 6-1, 6-0 to clinch the match, before
Alex Maulouet took advantage of his lone spot in the lineup this afternoon on court five with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Rosvall. In the lone ranked matchup in one-on-one play, No. 6 Cabrera came back from two-game deficits in both sets to run away from No. 27 Bonaiuti 6-3, 6-2. Lastly, on court three,
Albin Ekenros pulled away from Wallert 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) to complete the clean sweep.
The Argos have over a week off to enjoy the fruits of their labor in the conference slate but are back at it with three more regular season contests before traveling back up to Alabama's River Region the last weekend of April for the GSC Championship. First up is a neutral-site regional contest at Valdosta, Ga., against No. 19 Florida Southern on Sunday, April 13 at 10 am ET/9 am CT.
