MONTGOMERY, Ala. - No. 7 West Florida women's tennis (11-7, 5-3 GSC) fell behind early and couldn't make up the difference in a 5-2 upset loss to No. 34 Auburn Montgomery (8-5, 2-2 GSC) at the AUM Tennis Complex on Wednesday afternoon in the Argos' GSC regular season finale.
Carlota Verdu and
Sandra Recuenco, now ranked No. 7 in the ITA DII Doubles Rankings, fell 6-2 at the top of the lineup to Estefania Garcia and Ane Ibarra, and at the other end of the scorebook, Nahia Izco and Melissa Yakup Pour won by the same score over
Aline Midori Da Silva and
Guadalupe Martinez to clinch the point.
Luiza Daud and
Nathalia Mossambani finished up a 7-5 win in between over Sofia Neri and Ksenija Vujacic to keep some positive momentum for the guests.
Martinez, at No. 61 in the DII Singles Rankings, tied the match on court four of singles with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Vujacic. Neri then got the point back for AUM at the bottom of the lineup with a 6-1, 6-4 win over
Alberte Joergensen before Izco made it a two-point advantage with her 6-2, 6-3 final over No. 58 Midori Da Silva. On court one, Garcia clinched the stunner with a 6-2, 6-0 dispatching of No. 29 Verdu before Ibarra sealed it further with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) win over Mossambani. Recuenco set the final margin with a comeback 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 victory over Yakup Pour.
Though GSC play has wrapped up, the Argos still have some critical South Region contests coming up, starting with a pair of neutral-site contests at 10 am ET/9 am CT in Valdosta, Ga., against Tampa on Saturday, April 12 and No. 33 Florida Southern on Sunday, April 13.
