PENSACOLA, Fla. – UWF Softball (32-14, 21-10) took game one of their weekend series with Valdosta State, shutting out the Valdosta State Blazers (25-22, 18-12) Friday afternoon.
Tomorrow's doubleheader will determine where the Argos will be seated as they try to lock up the no. 2 seed in the GSC Tournament.
UWF won 3-0, as
Haley Guffey (21-7) earned her GSC-leading ninth shutout of the season. Her 21
st win gives her the best record in the conference, and Guffey's season ERA improves to 2.05 which places her at fifth in the GSC.
Two Argos went yard today, those being
Hannah Harper and
Erin Moon. Moon hit her second of the year, and Harper moves to third on the team with her seventh.
The Argos also excelled in small ball today, recording three sacrifice hits and a sacrifice flyout, one belonging to
Erin Moon who recorded her 41st RBI to move up to fourth-most in the conference. Her seventh sac fly also leads the GSC.
Gianna Guerriero also recorded her sixth stolen base in the last three games for a GSC leading total of 36 on the year.
UWF 3, VSU 0
Moon opened things up in the first inning with a blast to right field. The Blazers recorded a hit in the bottom of the inning, but a foul out ended the frame. Harper opened the second with a leadoff home run to right field pushing it to 2-0. A
Bella Holliday sac bunt almost brought
Emma Brice in for a run, but she was called out at home.
The next three innings saw a total of one hit as five of the six half innings were 1-2-3. UWF finally broke the defensive struggle in the sixth with a Guerriero single and her stolen base to second. A Discenza sac bunt advanced Guerriero to third, and a Moon sac fly brought her home.
VSU almost broke the shutout in the bottom of the sixth, recording a leadoff hit and a walk in the inning. UWF took out the lead runner at second on a fielder's choice and a couple foul outs ended the inning, stranding two.
UWF couldn't get anything going in the seventh, but didn't need to as Valdosta only managed a hit in the final frame, and Guffey sealed the win with a swinging strikeout for out no. 3 in the bottom of the inning.
