Argos Advance to Championship with Wins over UWA and Lee

No. 2 Seed UWF Move on to Revenge Match with No. 1 Seed Valdosta State

GSC CHAMPIONSHIP CENTRAL

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - No. 1 and No. 2-seeded West Florida men's tennis (23-1, 7-1 GSC) took care of business in the GSC Quarterfinals over No. 7 seed West Alabama (6-14, 2-6 GSC) and the Semifinals over No. 3 seed Lee (14-3, 6-2 GSC) to advance to the GSC Championship against top-seed Valdosta State on Saturday morning.

UWF 4, UWA 0
UWF earned its second sweep of No. 7 seed West Alabama this season in the GSC Championship Quarterfinals on Friday afternoon at O'Connor Tennis Center. The Argos remain undefeated against the Tigers in 27 all-time meetings.

On court three of doubles, Miguel Cabrera and Bernardo Costa got the day started with a 6-1 win over Federico Iturbe and Jacob Tapia before Tomas Leston and Sebastian Sotelo followed with their own 6-1 win over Francisco Oliveira and Eita Ishikawa to clinch the opening point early.

At the top of the singles board, No. 7 Cabrera put the Argos halfway to the sweep with his 6-0, 6-2 win over No. 59 Oliveira. Albin Ekenros followed suit on court five with his 6-3, 6-1 win over Tomas Almeida to get one away. No. 32 Sotelo answered the call, taking down No. 73 Afonso Portugal on court three 6-2, 6-1 to move on to spare no time advancing to the semifinals on Saturday afternoon.

UWF 4, Lee 1
It took a bit longer than the first matchup, but the Argos easily dispatched No. 3 seed Lee in the GSC Semifinals on Saturday at Lagoon Park. UWF swept the Flames on the road last month, but found itself on the ropes early.

Cabrera and Costa won 6-2 on court three, but the Flames promptly took down both of the Argos' ranked duos. Quinn Groenendijk and Jip Langerhuizen, the 14th-ranked duo in the DII Doubles Rankings, upset top-ranked Diego Duran and Sebastian Rondon 6-4. Filipe Krohn and Stefan Mos then knocked off the No. 44-ranked pairing of Leston and Sotelo by the narrowest of margins, 7-6 (7-5), to claim a stunning 1-0 lead.

The Argos weren't going to see their time in the GSC Championship cut short this way, however. Duran tied the match in matchup No. 4 of singles as he edged out Langerhuizen 6-0, 6-4. Two courts up, No. 9 Rondon built an early lead and held on to win 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) over Groenendijk to give his team the lead. On court six, Alex Maulouet got his team one point away from the finals as he won 6-4, 6-3 over Rytis Razminas. At the other end of the lineup, No. 7 Cabrera won in almost the same fashion 6-3, 6-2 over No. 52 Wihan van der Merwe to put his squad in the championship match.

It all comes down to the GSC title match on Saturday morning between the top two teams in the conference, the South Region and all of DII. The teams could then meet again in regionals, hosted by the top seed that will undoubtedly be determined by this match. With all that on the line, the Argos get another shot at the team that handed them their sole loss on the season, as well as head coach Derrick Racine's alma mater and college coach in Valdosta State and John Hansen. No. 2 seed UWF (23-1, 7-1 GSC) takes on the top seed in the conference and region in Valdosta State (19-0, 8-0 GSC) at 11 am at Lagoon Park on Saturday.
