SAINT LEO, Fla. – UWF Softball (38-16, 22-11) is fighting another day as they advanced in the NCAA DII South Regional after eliminating the Mississippi College Choctaws 3-2.
UWF has shined under pressure in recent games, as today's win was the fourth win by a single run in the Argo's five wins this postseason. It is the eighth regional win and 20
th overall postseason win of head coach
Ashliegh McLean's career. She is 20-12 overall in the postseason since taking the helm in 2019.
The Argos were scheduled to play the Saint Leo Lions who lost to Auburn Montgomery earlier Friday afternoon; however, inclement weather in central Florida forced it to be postponed to tomorrow at 10:00 AM ET. If the Argos win against the Lions, they will face Auburn Montgomery and will have to beat them twice to advance to the NCAA South Super Regional.
Freshman
Nevaeh Hayes provided two of the three RBI in the win, both coming in one swing in the top of the first inning.
GSC Co-Player of the Year
Gianna Guerriero continues to have consistent production into the postseason, increasing her hit streak to 15 games and going two for four with a run Friday. The GSC Golden Glove winner also had an incredible home run stealing catch at the centerfield wall in the fourth inning that would have tied the game for the Choctaws.
Haley Guffey (24-7) earned the win and her second of the Argos' postseason. The junior allowed one earned run on five hits, a walk, and three strikeouts.
Hannah Harper earned save No. 3 on the season after entering in the sixth inning and holding the Choctaws to a single hit.
UWF 3, MC 2 – NCAA DII South Regional
UWF started off sharp, wasting no time plating two runs on four hits. Guerriero started with a leadoff hit followed by
Angelia Discenza.
Erin Moon recorded her eighth sacrifice bunt of the year to advance Guerriero and Discenza to third and second. Hayes brought them both in on a 2-RBI single.
Mississippi College worked two on based on a single and a hit-by-pitch. Guffey and UWF forced the Choctaws to leave them on. Both teams went in order in the second and left runners on again in the third. In the fourth, UWF once again moved two runners into scoring position, but a foul out stranded them both.
The Choctaws reached a runner on a fielder's choice and a sacrifice advanced her to second. An RBI single brought her in to cut the deficit to 2-1 heading to the fifth. The Choctaws tied up the game in the fifth with two outs after a walk, a single, and a fielding error. UWF managed to close off the inning after that stranding another two runners, but it was 2-2 entering the sixth.
Emma Brice gave the Argos what they needed in the sixth, responding immediately with a double down the right field line. A
Jessie Baughan sacrifice moved her to third, and
Bella Holliday scored her on an RBI single. Harper checked in for Guffey in the bottom of the sixth up 3-2, and held the Choctaws off for two innings, allowing one hit on her way to the save.
