Argo Softball Continues Dominance with Run Rule and Shutout

Argos take down Barry 15-6 in five innings, Sweep Nova Southeastern with 4-0 win

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – UWF Softball (4-0) is hot to start the 2026 season, gaining two more dominant wins over Sunshine State Conference teams on their road trip in South Florida. 
 
UWF started the afternoon by run-ruling Barry 15-6 and then securing their first shutout and sweep of the season over Nova Southeastern, 4-0. 
 
Haley Guffey earned her first shutout of the season after leading the GSC in the metric last year. The senior right hander allowed just three hits and totaled six strikeouts on her way to improving her season ERA to 1.17. Hannah Harper earned the win in Game one, with Brianna Adams and Nicole Mergen contributing innings.
 
Individual Highlights:
 
The Argos excelled in extra base hits, tallying seven total against the Bucs and two more against the Sharks. Hannah Harper, Emma Brice, and Jessie Baughan all hits doubles and triples against the Bucs, and Harper had two on the day including four runs, four RBI and four total hits.
 
Freshman Meg Fountain had three runs in the combined games and stole two bases. Kyndal Cornelius and Harper also stole three more combined to bring the Argos' total to five on the day. 
 
Mergen went 2 for 3 with three runs and four RBI in her performance against the Bucs, including her second home run of the season.
 
UWF 15, Barry 6
 
UWF jumped out to an early lead as Harper tripled to left field to score Meg Fountain. Mergen homered to left center later in the inning to score Harper and put the Argos up 3-0 in the first. In the bottom of the inning, the Bucs took the lead back with a ferocious series of hits and runs including an RBI groundout, an RBI double, and two RBI singles. At the end of the first, it was 3-4 Bucs. 
 
Both squads were held without a run in the second. In the third, Mergen helped tie the game with an RBI single, and was later scored by Brice who tripled to left center. Brice was scored by Baughan who doubled to left center. UWF claimed a 6-4 lead heading into the bottom of the inning. Barry bats were able to respond with an RBI double to bring it to 6-5 at the end of the inning. 
 
Both teams were once again blanked in the fourth, until UWF tore the game open in the fifth with a nine-run fifth inning. Baughan began the fireworks with a two-RBI triple, scoring Angelia Discenza and Harper. An error on a Nevaeh Hayes at-bat score Baughan and boarded Hayes. 
 
Up 9-5, the Argos continued the pressure, with Miranda Harmon driving in Hayes on an RBI single. Harper came back as the Argo bats went through a full nine rotation in the same inning, and Harper doubled for her second hit of the inning for a three-RBI hit. NSU added another miscue on an error that resulted in Harper scoring unearned and Mergen reaching. Brice added yet another extra base hit with an RBI double to score Mergen, and the Bucs managed the last out to stop the damage at 15-5.
 
Barry managed a few hits and an RBI single and had runners in scoring position to stave off the run rule in the bottom of the fifth, but the game ended in a flyout for a double play at third, giving the Argos the 15-6 win in five innings.
 
UWF 4, NSU 0
 
Haley Guffey stepped in the circle and allowed just two hits through the first three innings until the Argos jumped in front in the fourth. Harper hit her second triple of the day and scored off a fielder's choice that also got Brice to base. Abigail Pippen and doubled to right field to score Brice.
 
The Argos held their 2-0 lead to the seventh as Guffey continued to deal. UWF almost upped the lead in the sixth, but the Sharks got out of a bases loaded jam. UWF went on to get their insurance runs in the seventh as three consecutive errors by the Sharks gave runs to UWF. Miranda Harmon reached and went to second on an error, and then scored on the next error from third base. Fountain scored on another throwing error from first base and made it 4-0 Argos. 
 
Guffey struck out the first batter of the seventh and forced pop-ups for the final two outs to seal the shutout and the sweep over NSU.
