Argos Complete Perfect Weekend in South Florida with Doubleheader Wins Over Barry

Bats come alive as Argos put up 23 combined runs total, come back from down six in game 2

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The 2026 season could not have started much better for UWF Softball (6-0) as they leave South Florida with six straight wins and two sweeps, with their final two wins being over the Barry Buccaneers.

Argonaut bats were the story of the day, as they combined for 23 runs and 30 hits in the two combined games. UWF came back from being down as many as six runs in game two, and still managed to respond being down 3-9 to win 12-10.

The Argos have tied the best start to a season since the 2007 season with six straight wins to open the year. They improve their record against Barry to 10-13 all-time.

Individual Highlights:

The Argos once again relied on power hitting, combining for 10 extra base hits in the doubleheader.  Every member of the Argonaut lineup contributed to the wins in different moments at the plate and in the stats sheet.

Hannah Harper had a consistent day at the plate, batting 6 for 8 with three runs, a home run, and six RBI. She also contributed two stolen bases.

Freshman Miranda Harmon turned in a productive day, going a combined 5 for 8 with five total runs between the two games. She scored four runs in game one against the Bucs. The Ponte Vedra, FL native also stole four bases combined in the doubleheader.

Nicole Mergen continues to churn out big hits, crushing her third home run of the weekend. She went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBI in the same game one performance.

Haley Guffey pitched a full game in game one and earned her third win of the season. Her season ERA currently sits at 1.85 with 20 total K's after the weekend.

Game 1: UWF 11, Barry 4

UWF took an early 3-0 lead off an RBI single from Harper to score Harmon. Mergen's 2-RBI home run followed shortly after for the other two runs. Barry added one run in the bottom of the inning to make it 3-1.

Harper once again scored Harmon on an RBI single in the second inning to push the lead to 4-1. Barry drew even in the third inning on a single and an error on the play, followed by an RBI double and RBI single.

UWF entered the fourth tied 4-4 and didn't look back from there. Meg Fountain hit her first triple of her college career to score Harmon for the third time in the game. Emma Brice followed with an RBI double to score Olivia Keith. Jessie Baughan scored Brice on an RBI single, and then was plated on an error after a Nevaeh Hayes single. Kyndal Cornelius hit an RBI double down the left field line to score Angelia Discenza to make it 10-4 Argos at the end of the frame.

Alex Whitfield stole second in the fifth inning, allowing Harmon to score on the throw. With the score 11-4, Guffey slammed the door on a Barry comeback in the circle, as the UWF defense forced several groundouts in the last two innings and the senior ended the game on a swinging strikeout.

Game 2: UWF 12, Barry 10

For the second game in a row, UWF took a 3-0 lead in the first inning. This time, Hannah Harper hit her first home run on the season with a three RBI blast to deep right field. This time around, Barry forced the Argos to play catch up as they took a 3-4 lead in the first on a 2-RBI single, a sacrifice RBI, and finally an RBI single.

In the second, Barry tacked on two more runs on two more RBI singles. More hits and a two RBI single followed in the third, bringing the deficit to 3-9 in favor of Barry. Haley Guffey checked into the game as a relief pitcher and was able to hold off Barry for all but one score in the fourth inning as the Argos chipped away at the lead.

UWF put up two more runs in the fourth with a Baughan RBI triple to score Brice. A sacrifice flyout from Hayes brought in Baughan. Barry's one run in the bottom of the fourth made it 5-10, but once again, UWF rallied with an explosive inning to take the lead in the fifth.

Abigail Pippen started off the rally with an RBI double to bring in Harper. Brice produced an RBI groundout scoring Mergen, and Baughan scored Pippen on an RBI single after. Hayes recorded an RBI double benefitting Baughan, and a wild pitch scored Cornelius and put Hayes in scoring position. Another miscue by the Bucs defense right after sealed the collapse for Barry, allowing Hayes to score and Harmon to reach base. Barry got out of the inning but not before allowing six runs on six hits. UWF still stranded three in the frame.

The Argos added an insurance run on a sacrifice bunt from Cornelius to bring in Brice. A 6-4-1 double play closed out the final frame and secured the 12-10 comeback win for the sweep.
