Argos Win Matlock Classic to Open Spring Season

LAKELAND, Fla. – The No. 4 UWF men's golf team are back to their winning ways to begin the spring championship season. In their first tournament back since October, the Argos took first place at the Matlock Collegiate Classic at Lone Palm Golf Club. UWF shot 847 (-17) to win the event by seven strokes.

Every competing player for the Argos shot under par in the opening round where UWF finished -10 as a team. In the second round the team was seven under and then closed the tournament out at even par on Tuesday.

Per Ekelund led the way in the first two rounds for the Argos and finished third overall in the tournament at -7. The junior shot a pair of 67's in the first two rounds to get to 10-under heading into the final day. After bogeying his opening hole at No. 3, Ekelund went the final 17 holes with six birdies and 11 pars. In the second round he had seven birdies. Ekelund then shot 75 (+3) in the third round to place third overall.

TJ Thompson shot under par in every round for a fourth-place individual finish at -6. The junior battled the course in the first round with seven birdies and six bogeys to shoot 71. He then shot 69 in round two and closed the tournament out with a 70.

All six players finished in the top 15 individual spots. Freshman Harper Ackermann, who competed as an individual finished tied for ninth at one under par after his 54 holes.

UWF was the highest nationally-ranked team in the field and defeated 10 other top-50 programs in NCAA DII.

Next up for the Argos is a sneak peek into the course where the 2026 National Championship will be played. The team will head to the Las Vegas Desert Classic on March 1 at Boulder Creek Golf Club.
