No. 13 Softball Takes Down Georgia Southwestern on the Road

Argos take down Hurricanes 9-2 in Americus

AMERICUS, Ga. – No. 13 UWF Softball (10-1) continued its successful road stretch to open the 2026 season, this time handing the Georgia Southwestern Hurricanes (4-1) their first loss of the season in their own stadium.

The Argos trailed in the first inning and were tied with the Hurricanes 2-2 entering the sixth inning but continued their trend of high scoring rallies in late innings, putting up four runs in the sixth and three in the seventh.

It is just the second time the two programs have met, but the Argos are now 2-0 after winning 19-9 in Americus back in 2024.

Individual Highlights:

Senior Emma Brice lit up the stat sheet Thursday night, hitting her first home run of the season and added a team-leading seventh double. Overall, she went 2-4 with three runs and three RBI.

Haley Guffey (6-0) got the win in the circle and allowed just three hits and two earned runs in the win to go along with four K's. Her season ERA sits at 2.60 as of tonight.

Jessie Baughan leads the team with a .500 batting average and was 1-1 for two runs and a walk today. The senior also stole three bases out of the six total the Argos had on the day.

Nicole Mergen hit her fourth home run of the season, a team-leading total. She was 2-4 with two run and an RBI.

UWF 9, GSW 2

The Hurricanes saw a few batters reach in the first inning and drove in one on an RBI groundout. In the second, UWF quickly took the lead back on a Nevaeh Hayes RBI double to score Brice. Cornelius knocked a hit up the middle, allowing Olivia Keith to score.

GSW tied it up in the third on an RBI double to left center making it 2-2. Both squad's pitchers tightened up for the next couple innings, with the Hurricanes going in order twice, and the Argos stranding two runners. Finally in the sixth, UWF broke the deadlock and took control.

Brice homered after Mergen and Hannah Harper got on base with singles, and scored both for a 3- RBI home run. Bella Holliday scored Baughan on an RBI single shortly after.

UWF again stood up the Hurricanes in order and entered the seventh up 6-2. Mergen added a run on a solo blast to left field. Pippen hit an RBI single to score Brice once again, allowing Baughan to advance to third. Baughan stole home with some crafty base running, adding the game's final run. UWF allowed one hit in the bottom of the seventh, but took care of the rest to win 9-2.
