Argos complete GSC Opening Weekend with Sweep of Lady Bucs

Mergen Tallies all RBI in win, Argos receive 2025 GSC Championship Rings

PENSACOLA, Fla. – There was not a more fitting way for the No. 12 UWF Softball team (14-2, 3-0) to celebrate their 2025 GSC Championship Ceremony than earning a sweep over the Christian Brothers Bucs (3-8, 0-3) on the opening weekend of GSC play.

The Argos received their championship rings commemorating the feat from the previous year and followed it up with a 3-1 victory over the Lady Bucs. The Argos have now recorded 11-straight sweeps over the Lady Bucs dating back to 2015. They have yet to lose a series to CBU in program history.

Individual Highlights:

Haley Guffey allowed one earned run in seven innings, and pitched a GSC-leading 9th win. Her season ERA improves to 2.32.

Nicole Mergen was the offensive hero in game three, going 2 for 2 with a single, home run, and walk. She also recorded all three RBI in the game. She highlighted the performance by blasting a home run to right center for her team-leading sixth long ball. The final two RBI she generated on the homer ending up being the winning runs in the effort.

#12 UWF 3, CBU 1

Haley Guffey started in the circle and CBU struck first with a double and a single to move into scoring position. A lineout allowed the runner at third to tag up and score on the throw.

UWF quickly responded in the bottom of the inning with two singles and an error, allowing Brice to score unearned. Mergen tallied the hit on the RBI and error.

Innings two and three were dominated by pitching, as both teams managed just one hit combined. In the bottom of the fourth, Harper singled up the middle and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Mergen stepped up big and homered to left center to bring them both in and take a 3-1 lead.

Guffey and UWF held on to the 3-1 lead until the end of the game, allowing just two hits and stranded both to claim the sweep.
