PENSACOLA, Fla. — The Argos (15-11, 11-9 Gulf South) celebrated senior day with a decisive 77-51 victory over Christian Brothers University (3-23, 0-20 Gulf South) at UWF Field House. This win not only marked a special day for the seniors but also secured West Florida's spot in the GSC Tournament.
Avery O'Connor led the charge with 16 points and nine rebounds, showcasing her prowess on both ends of the court.
Amelia Bell added 12 points, grabbed six boards, and recorded a block, while
Janai Jordan contributed 11 points and snagged two steals.
Isabel Grimes chipped in with 11 points and four assists.
The game kicked off with Bell setting the pace by scoring a layup. The Argos stumbled slightly with eight turnovers in the first quarter, but O'Connor's crucial layup and defensive rebound, along with Jordan's 3-pointer, kept them in the game. The Bucs took advantage of these early mistakes, ending the quarter with an 18-13 lead.
In the second quarter, the Argos turned up the heat, outscoring the Bucs 26–5. O'Connor sparked the comeback with a layup and a 3-pointer, helping West Florida seize the lead. Grimes extended the advantage with a 3-pointer, thanks to an assist from O'Connor.
Annarose Tyre and
Finley Kennedy capitalized on turnovers, while Jordan added a jump shot and a 3-pointer to the mix. The half closed with West Florida on top, 39–23, after Bell's late layup.
The Argos kept the momentum going in the third quarter, highlighted by Grimes' fast-break layup and O'Connor's 3-pointer. West Florida owned the paint, netting 10 points and sinking six of seven free throws. Christian Brothers managed 13 points in the quarter but couldn't close the gap, leaving West Florida ahead 58–36.
In the final quarter, the Argos maintained their grip on the game. Grimes nailed a 3-pointer just 14 seconds in, setting the tone. O'Connor and Bell continued to add crucial points in the paint, with Bell's layup at 6:07 pushing the lead to 67–41. The Argos' defense stood firm, limiting the Bucs' chances while
Maddy Rendall and Tyre added key free throws in the closing minutes.
Kathryn Ford's free throws at 56 seconds put the finishing touch on the quarter, sealing a 77–51 victory for the Argos. They outscored the Bucs 19–15 in the fourth quarter.
