CLEVELAND, Miss. — The University of West Florida fell to Delta State University 2-1 on Friday night. The Argonauts managed six hits in the contest but were unable to overcome the Statesmen's two-run performance.
Delta State took an early lead in the third inning after an RBI single that allowed the Statesmen to finish it 1-0.
In the eighth inning, Delta State extended its lead with a score on a wild pitch, making it 2-0.
The Argonauts attempted a comeback in the ninth inning.
William Lybrook doubled to right field, followed by
Andrew Walton's RBI double down the right field line, scoring Lybrook. However, Delta State managed to hold onto its lead.
Colton Dorsey delivered a solid performance, pitching 6 innings and allowing only 1 earned run on 3 hits. He struck out 9 batters while issuing 3 walks.
Christian Pencek contributed 1.1 innings in relief, striking out 2 and allowing 1 earned run.
West Florida will finish the series against Delta State on Saturday with a doubleheader that begins at 1 p.m.
