PENSACOLA, Fla. — West Florida (23-6, 10-4 GSC) extended their winning streak to five games with a doubleheader sweep against Union University (Tenn.) (11-16, 6-8 GSC) on Friday afternoon, winning the first game 2-0 and the second game 7-1.
UWF is now 31-6 against the Bulldogs and improves to 13-3 at home in the series history. The Argos are tied for second with AUM in the GSC standings at 10-4.
Individual Highlights:
The Argos' senior bullpen showed out for a second straight doubleheader, with main pitchers
Hannah Harper and
Haley Guffey each excelling.
Guffey pitched a complete game shutout, facing 23 batters, allowing just one hit and striking out two, resulting in a WHIP of 0.29 and improving her win-loss record to 15-1. It is her third shutout of the season.
Harper pitched a complete game, allowing just one earned run and facing 25 batters while yielding six hits and walking none. She maintained control with 46 strikes out of 70 total pitches, forcing Union to ground out 15 times and contributing to two double plays, which improved her season record to 6-3.
Harper also sailed her fourth home run of the season with a 3-RBI blast in game two.
Freshmen
Miranda Harmon and
Meg Fountain had high-production days at the plate. Fountain batted 3-for-5 with a run, an RBI, and two doubles in the combined effort. Harmon went 2-for-4 with four runs, an RBI, and three walks to be everywhere on the basepaths for the Argos in the twinbill.
Senior
Emma Brice hit two more doubles today for a GSC-leading 13 at the midpoint of the regular season. She hit 14 in all of last year.
**#18 UWF 2, UU 0:**
In Game 1, West Florida secured a victory with a standout performance from Guffey in the circle, who allowed just one hit over seven innings, clinching a shutout win.
The Argonauts took an early lead in the first inning when
Miranda Harmon walked and stole second.
Angelia Discenza then singled up the middle, allowing Harmon to score on the throw, giving West Florida a 1-0 lead by the end of the first inning.
In the third inning, Harmon singled and advanced to third on a throwing error following another single by Discenza. Harmon then scored on a wild pitch, increasing West Florida's lead to 2-0.
The remaining innings showcased strong defensive play from West Florida, which held Union scoreless. The Argos held on for the 2-0 score.
**#18 UWF 7, UU 1:**
In Game 2, West Florida continued their dominance, defeating Union 7-1. The Argonauts began strong in the first inning, with Harmon walking and advancing to third base on a steal and a throw, eventually scoring on a wild pitch, securing a 1-0 lead.
The pivotal fifth inning saw West Florida score five runs, starting with
Olivia Keith reaching on an error and
Meg Fountain doubling to advance her to third. Harmon singled, driving in Keith, and errors by Union allowed Fountain to score. A homer by
Hannah Harper brought in three more runs, including Harmon and
Angelia Discenza, extending the lead to 6-0 by the end of the fifth inning.
In the sixth inning, the Argonauts added another run when
Emma Brice doubled and was driven home by a single from Fountain, making the score 7-0. Union managed to score one run in the seventh inning, but it wasn't enough to challenge West Florida's lead, with the final score for Game 2 standing at 7-1.
