Argos Fall To AUM in Extra Innings

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — West Florida (25-8, 12-6 GSC) narrowly fell to Auburn University at Montgomery (28-5, 13-5 GSC) with a final score of 6–5 in an extra-inning battle on Saturday. UWF tallied 10 hits and drew six walks, while Miranda Harmon and Angelia Discenza each contributed a double in the tight contest.

Nicole Mergen posted an impressive performance, recording three hits, including a double, and driving in one run. Meg Fountain contributed with two hits, one run scored, and added four assists in the field. Hannah Harper tallied a run, a hit, and an RBI, highlighted by a double. Emma Brice added two hits and one run, while also executing a sacrifice bunt.

AUM clinched the game in the bottom of the 10th inning with an RBI single.

The Argos initially gained momentum in the third inning, capitalizing on a throwing error to score two runs. Bella Holliday drew a walk and Fountain's bunt single, combined with the error, allowed both runners to cross the plate. Harper contributed with a double, and Mergen's RBI single brought Harper home, further narrowing the deficit. In the seventh, a throwing error by the opposing shortstop enabled Brice to score, leveling the game and sending it into extra innings.

Despite the pressure and opportunities created by UWF, including a runner reaching third base in the 10th inning, they were unable to capitalize further, ultimately falling short in the extended contest.

Haley Guffey pitched seven innings, allowing seven hits and four earned runs while striking out one batter. She faced 33 batters and threw 72 pitches, with 47 strikes, resulting in a WHIP of 1.39. Brianna Adams appeared in relief, pitching an inning, giving up one hit and one earned run, while issuing four walks and striking out one. Adams managed to hold the opponents to a single run during her time on the mound.

Up next, the Argos will face Spring Hill on Tuesday, March 31, at 2 p.m. CT in Mobile, Alabama.
