MOBILE, Ala. — No. 16 West Florida (27-8) secured two victories over Spring Hill College (20-17) in the first game of their doubleheader at Murray Field on Tuesday.
The Argonauts broke open the first game with a six-run fifth inning, capitalizing on three doubles and six stolen bases throughout the contest. In game two, the bats were once again alive as the Argonauts scored on two home runs and a total of 10 hits to secure the win. Spring Hill had 11 hits of their own in the second game, but the UWF defense managed to get out of multiple bases loaded scenarios to minimize scoring.
UWF's wins complete a regular season sweep of the Badgers for the 2026 season, going 4-0.
Individual Highlights:
Haley Guffey (17-3) pitched 4 innings, allowing 4 hits and 1 earned run while striking out 1 batter. She faced 17 batters, walking 2, and threw 75 pitches, 48 of which were strikes, resulting in a WHIP of 1.50.
Brianna Adams entered in relief, pitching a perfect inning by retiring all 3 batters she faced with 9 pitches, 7 of which were strikes.
Hannah Harper continued her hot streak at the plate, leading all Argos with a .571 batting average with a 4-for-7 day, contributing three runs, a double, a home run, and two RBI. She was also 3-for-3 on stolen bases.
Nicole Mergen also entered to pitch in game two, earning a save and allowing just three hits and an earned run in her two innings. She also contributed two doubles and four RBI at the plate.
Game 1: No. 16 UWF 10, SHC 1 / five innings
The game began with Spring Hill taking an early lead, scoring one unearned run in the first inning. However, West Florida responded strongly in the fourth inning.
Miranda Harmon reached first on an error, later scoring when
Nicole Mergen reached on another error.
Hannah Harper and
Abigail Pippen also scored, ending the inning 4-1 in favor of West Florida.
In the fifth inning, the Argonauts extended their lead significantly. Harper doubled, followed by Mergen's RBI double. A series of plays, including an RBI single by
Alex Whitfield and a bases-clearing double by
Meg Fountain, added six runs to the scoreboard. The inning concluded with West Florida leading 10-1. Neither team scored in the sixth inning, and the game ended with West Florida securing a solid victory over Spring Hill, 10-1.
Game 2: No. 16 UWF 7, SHC 5
West Florida took an early lead in the first inning with
Nicole Mergen's double driving in
Miranda Harmon and
Angelia Discenza, putting them up 2-0 after one inning. The second inning saw West Florida extend its lead as
Meg Fountain scored on
Angelia Discenza's single, and
Hannah Harper hit a two-run homer, making it 5-0.
In the fifth inning,
Gabrielle Luna hit a sacrifice fly that allowed pinch runner
Alex Whitfield to score, increasing West Florida's lead to 6-0. However, Spring Hill responded with four runs in their half, narrowing the gap to 6-4. In the sixth inning,
Jessie Baughan homered, adding another run for West Florida, making it 7-4. Despite Spring Hill scoring once more in the seventh inning, West Florida maintained its lead, concluding the game with a 7-5 win.
