Argonaut Softball Picks Up Win over Lee in Series Opener

UWF capitalizes on base running, errors and solid hitting

PENSACOLA, Fla. — West Florida (28-8, 13-6) secured an 8-3 victory over Lee University (Tenn.) (13-26, 6-13) at the UWF Softball Complex on Thursday, bolstered by eight hits and four stolen bases.
 
 UWF scored runs on multiple Lee pitching and fielding errors to drive runs in and take the first game of the series.
 
Individual Highlights:
 
Haley Guffey pitched a complete game, earning her 18th win of the season. She struck out five batters without issuing any walks, showcasing control with 68 of her 93 pitches going for strikes. Her performance included inducing 10 flyouts and six groundouts, while maintaining a WHIP of 0.57.
 
Miranda Harmon scored two runs to once again lead the team from the leadoff spot. Nicole Mergen added two hits, including a double, and drove in one run. 
 
Emma Brice contributed with her 15th double of the year and two RBIs. She had 14 all last season and has already surpassed that number with 14 more regular season games left.

West Florida claimed an 8-3 victory over Lee, starting strong with three runs in the first inning. Miranda Harmon singled and advanced to third on groundouts, allowing Nicole Mergen to drive her in with a single. Emma Brice then doubled, bringing in Mergen, and Abigail Pippen scored on a wild pitch. By inning's end, the score was tied at 3-2.
 
In the second inning, Bella Holliday's single and subsequent advancement on a wild pitch set up Meg Fountain's RBI single. Fountain then stole third and scored on Angelia Discenza's groundout. The Argos led 5-2 after two innings.
 
The fourth inning saw the Argos extend their lead. Fountain singled and advanced on an error, allowing Harmon to score after another error. Discenza walked and later scored on an error, making it 7-2 by the end of the inning.
 
In the fifth inning, Mergen doubled and was replaced by pinch runner Kyndal Cornelius, who scored on Brice's groundout, bringing the score to 8-3.
 
The final innings were quiet for both teams, with West Florida maintaining its 8-3 advantage through the seventh inning to secure the win.
