Harmon Walks Off Game Two, Argos Split With Blazers

Argos come back from being down five runs, force rubber match for series against Blazers

PENSACOLA, Fla. — The University of West Florida (36-10, 21-8 GSC) faced Valdosta State University (22-23, 14-15 GSC) in a doubleheader on Friday, resulting in a hard-fought loss in the first game and a thrilling walk-off victory in the second.
 
The Argos and Blazers came back from being down multiple runs in both games and traded comeback wins. UWF was down by as many as 5 runs in game two and battled back to tie up the series 1-1. 
 
The Argos stay in second in the GSC, a half game behind AUM and tied with West Alabama in record but benefiting from the head to head series win over the Tigers. 
 
Individual Highlights:
 
Miranda Harmon was the hero of game two, grabbing her only hit of the day when it mattered most, scoring Lulu Leudtke to get the walkoff. The GSC leader in runs also added two more runs to her season total, as well as two walks, an RBI and two stolen bases.
 
Meg Fountain had a phenomenal game two, going 4-for-4  and adding two runs on the day with a double. 
 
Jessie Baughan hit 3-for-6 with a run, a home run, and an RBI. Hanna Harper hit .500 once again, going 3-for-6 with a run, two doubles, and 2 RBI. 
 
Despite the loss in game one, Haley Guffey pitched a complete game for West Florida, throwing 7 innings and allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 6 hits, while striking out 3 and walking 1. She threw a total of 115 pitches, with 76 strikes. The loss brings her season record to 23-4.
 
Game 1: No. 14  UWF 2, VSU 3
 
The Argonauts took an early lead with two runs in the first inning, but the Blazers responded with two runs in the second and the decisive run in the sixth.
 
West Florida's scoring began in the first inning when Miranda Harmon walked and advanced on two stolen bases, eventually scoring on a catcher error. Angelia Discenza also reached base via walk and scored on a sacrifice fly from Abigail Pippen, concluding the inning with the Argonauts leading 2–0.
 
Valdosta State countered in the second inning, scoring two runs with Charlotte Phillips and Cailyn Cooke each singling, followed by Rachel Lee's double that drove both home, tying the game at 2–2.
 
The game remained tied through the fifth inning with neither team able to score. In the sixth, the Blazers took the lead when a pinch runner scored on an error by the Argonauts' third baseman, making it 3–2.
 
In the final inning, the Argonauts had a chance to rally with Emma Brice doubling and Jessie Baughan singling to advance Brice to third. However, the rally fell short, leaving the final score at Valdosta State 3, West Florida 2.
 
Game 2: No. 14 UWF 7, VSU 6
 
The Argonauts bounced back with a dramatic 7-6 victory in the second game, securing a walk-off win in the bottom of the seventh inning. West Florida collected 13 hits in the game, including a home run, overcoming an early deficit after Valdosta State scored five runs in the first inning.
 
Valdosta State jumped ahead early, scoring five runs in the first. Saylor McNearney crossed home plate after a walk to Charlotte Phillips, and Annalise Buncy scored on a sacrifice fly by Cailyn Cooke. Rachel Lee's single brought in two more runs, followed by Evie Pitts doubling to score Lee, making it 5-1 at the end of the first inning.
 
West Florida began its comeback in the third when Meg Fountain doubled and later scored on a double by Harper, narrowing the gap to 6-2. 
 
In the fifth inning, the Argonauts continued their rally. Emma Brice singled home Angelia Discenza, while Abigail Pippen's single brought in Harper, cutting the deficit to 6-4.
 
The sixth inning saw Fountain score an unearned run after a fielder's choice and an error, bringing the score to 6-5.
 
In the final inning, Jessie Baughan hit a home run to center field, tying the game. Later, Lulu Luedtke scored the winning run on Harmon's single, sealing a 7-6 victory for West Florida.
