Argos Defeat Tigers in GSC Semifinals; Advance to Championship

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The West Florida women's tennis team edged past University of West Alabama with a 4-3 victory on Friday in the semifinals of the 2026 GSC Championship. The Argonauts secured the win by taking four singles matches, including victories at the No. 3, No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 positions and will now play for the GSC Championship.

West Florida fell behind early as West Alabama secured the doubles point with victories at No. 2 and No. 1 doubles. Valentina Mutilba and Jenaila Prulla defeated Guadalupe Martinez and Aline Da Silva, 6-1, at No. 2 doubles. The No. 1 doubles match was won by Alexa Milliam and Shaira Rivera, ranked No. 2, who overcame the No. 5 ranked pair of Sandra Recuenco and Carlota Verdu, 7-5. West Florida earned a win at No. 3 doubles, where Sophie Smith and Kylie Kochis triumphed 6-1 over Nanoka Kazama and Greta Zawels.

In singles, West Alabama initially extended its lead when No. 19 Alexa Milliam defeated No. 33 Sandra Recuenco, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 2 singles. However, the Argonauts quickly responded with a win at No. 4 singles, where No. 37 Guadalupe Martinez secured a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Jian Ibrahim, tying the overall match at 1-1. Da Silva, ranked No. 30, pushed West Florida ahead with a 6-2, 7-6 victory against No. 67 Valentina Mutilba at No. 3 singles.

Smith expanded West Florida's lead with a 6-3, 6-2 win over No. 58 Nanoka Kazama at No. 6 singles, bringing the dual score to 3-2. The match was clinched by Verdu, ranked No. 5, who overcame No. 7 Shaira Rivera 7-6, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. In the final match, Alberte Joergensen added to the margin with a hard-fought 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 win over No. 52 Jenaila Prulla at No. 5 singles, making the final dual score 4-2 in favor of West Florida.
