SURPRISE, Ariz. — The University of West Florida men's tennis team fell to 6-seed Flagler College 2-4 on Saturday in the national semifinal round at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Club. The Argonauts secured the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions.
West Florida claimed the doubles point with victories on courts No. 1 and No. 2. The No. 1 doubles team of
Diego Duran and
Sebastian Rondon, ranked No. 1, edged Flagler's No. 30 pair of Ilian Borlee and Simon Malis, 7-6(4). On court No. 2,
Mark Neyelov and Gonalo Quintela secured a 7-5 win over Aly El Rafie and Filip Kana, ensuring the doubles point for the Argonauts. Flagler's pair Aniss Rafiq and Oliver Hradilek won at No. 3 doubles, 6-2, over
Vicente Couto and
Rafael Sabio.
In singles action, Flagler responded strongly, with Ilian Borlee, ranked No. 14, defeating Couto, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 3 singles and Simon Malis, ranked No. 17, securing a 6-1, 6-4 victory over the top-ranked Rondon at No. 1 singles.
The Argonauts' lone singles victory came from Gonalo Quintela, who delivered a straight-set win at No. 5 singles, defeating Kana 6-2, 6-2. However, the effort was not enough, as Flagler clinched the dual match with Aniss Rafiq, ranked No. 35, completed Flagler's singles triumph with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over Duran, ranked No. 3, at No. 2 singles. The Saints also secured a win at No. 6 singles, where Oliver Hradilek defeated Neyelov, 7-5, 6-0.
