PADUCAH, Ky. – It was a day of historic accolades for the UWF women's golf team.
In just their second competition of the season as a Division I program the Argos won their first tournament by winning The Velvet Classic in dramatic fashion. UWF fought back from down two strokes heading into the final hole to force a sudden death playoff hole which was claimed by the Argos to win the tournament. UWF finished with a final team score of 882 (+16) which set a new team score record for the tournament.
Mariana Arronte also became the first individual to win a tournament at the DI level. The junior shot 73-70-71 over three rounds to finish two under par. She won the event by five strokes and was the only player to finish under par.
Two different Argos stepped up in a big way for the team to force the playoff hole.
Isabela Urruchua and
Melanie Maier both birdied their final hole to tie Austin Peay. Urruchua finished on No. 1 – a par 5, 462-yard hole and Maier completed her round on No. 3 a par 4, 334-yard hole. Urruchua was even on the day and finished in seventh place at +5. Maier had her best round shooting a 73 (+1) to move up 12 spots.
In the sudden death playoff the Argos took full control. UWF played the hole at three under and Austin Peay finished one over. Arronte, Urruchua and
Samantha Schultz all birdied No. 18 which served as the playoff hole. Maier and
Lauren Patterson both parred the hole
In addition to Arronte and Urruchua, Schultz also finished in the top 10 as an individual. The senior was +7 over 54 holes.
The team score of 882 was the best mark for the team since Oct. 8 of 2024 when the team shot the same score at the LeeAnn Noble Memorial.
The Argos will play at The Robbie on Oct. 11 hosted by Lipscomb at Temple Hills Golf Club in Nashville, Tenn.
