CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The University of West Florida volleyball team (9-2, 1-0 ASUN) swept Queens (4-10, 0-1 ASUN), 25-16, 25-22, 25-15, on Saturday to earn its first conference victory of the Division I era. The Argos hit .302 with 40 kills and 10 total blocks while holding Queens to a .165 hitting percentage.

Delaney Hanowell picked three kills early in the first set while Karyna Werley added two as West Florida built an 8-3 lead. With the Argos ahead 10-6, Madison Joyner served four straight points, including an ace, to push the advantage to 14-6. Queens cut into the deficit, but West Florida kept its lead at six or more the rest of the set. Hanowell finished it with a kill from Lizzy Kwiatkowski to give the Argos a 25-16 win and an early 1-0 advantage.

Queens moved ahead 8-6 in the second set before West Florida scored five of the next six points to take an 11-9 lead. The Argos later used kills from Kumara Flanagain, Emily Breazeale, Aniston Cochran, Werley, Hanowell and Talya Sampson to build a 20-16 lead. Queens rallied to tie the set at 21-21, but a Royals service error and a Werley kill put West Florida back in front. Werley added another kill to bring up set point, and Cochran and Sampson combined on a block to close out the set 25-22.

Queens took a 6-5 lead in the third before Sampson tied the set with a kill and Joyner served West Florida through seven straight points. Joyner had three aces during the run as the Argos moved ahead 13-6. West Florida extended its lead to 19-10 before Queens scored five straight points to get within four. A Queens service error stopped the run, and Werley served out the final five points as Hanowell, Kwiatkowski and Kennedy Plummer added kills to seal the sweep.

Hanowell led the Argos with nine kills while hitting .643 and added six total blocks. Werley finished with eight kills, 13 assists, nine digs and an ace. Kwiatkowski recorded a team-high 18 assists with six digs and two block assists, while Joyner tallied four aces and two digs.

West Florida returns to action Friday, October 2, when the Argos visit Stetson. First serve is set for 5 p.m. at Insight Credit Union Arena at Edmunds Center in DeLand, Florida. The match will be broadcast on ESPN+. Live stats will be available on GoArgos.com.
