Billy VandeMerkt joined the UWF football coaching staff in January 2015 as a graduate assistant. He assists defensive coordinator Cory Sanders with the UWF linebacking corps.
 
VandeMerkt saw action in four seasons at quarterback for Saint Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, Ind., where he played for Sanders, who was the Pumas' head coach from 2011-14. VandeMerkt was one of the top quarterbacks in school history, finishing second or third in numerous offensive categories.
 
He was an All-Great Lakes Valley Conference selection during his senior season when he passed for 1,480 yards and 13 touchdowns, while also running for 291 yards with two touchdowns. That season he also ranked 50th in Division II in passing efficiency (134.1). As a junior in 2012 he was named D2Football.com National Player of the Week after passing for 449 yards and rushing for 84 against William Jewell. He also passed for a GLVC record nine touchdowns that game.
