Tanner Smith enters his first season as head coach of the University of West Florida men's basketball program in 2026-27 after being named to the position in April 2026.

Smith brings more than a decade of collegiate coaching experience to Pensacola, including tenures at Appalachian State, Stephen F. Austin, Kennesaw State, Mississippi State and UNC Charlotte. Throughout his career, Smith has developed a reputation as a strong recruiter, player developer and defensive-minded coach while contributing to championship teams and NCAA postseason appearances at multiple levels.

Prior to arriving at West Florida, Smith spent three seasons at Appalachian State, serving his final season as Associate Head Coach under Dustin Kerns. During his time in Boone, Smith played a key role in one of the most successful stretches in program history.
In his first season with the Mountaineers in 2023-24, Smith helped App State establish a program record with 27 wins, capture its first outright regular-season conference championship since 1978-79 and complete an undefeated home schedule for the first time in the program's Division I era. The Mountaineers also earned their first National Invitation Tournament appearance since the 2006-07 season.
App State combined efficient offense with one of the nation's top defensive units during the historic campaign, averaging 78.4 points per game while leading the Sun Belt Conference in scoring defense and blocks per game. The Mountaineers finished the season with the 19th-best scoring margin in NCAA Division I.
Smith helped App State continue its success in 2024-25, as the Mountaineers won 17 games overall and 10 in conference play. App State recorded 26 conference victories across Smith's first two seasons and posted consecutive seasons with at least 10 league wins for the first time since 2009-10 and 2010-11.
Defense remained a staple of the program during Smith's tenure. App State led the Sun Belt in scoring defense in each of his first two seasons while ranking among the nation's top 10 in field-goal percentage defense, three-point field-goal percentage defense and fewest fouls per game during the 2024-25 campaign.
Smith also played a significant role in the development of App State's guards. Under his tutelage, Myles Tate emerged as one of the Sun Belt's top players and earned First Team All-Sun Belt and NABC All-South Atlantic District honors in 2024-25. Tate finished among the conference leaders in scoring, assists and steals while leading the league in assists per game.
Following the 2023-24 season, Smith was selected to participate in the Jay Bilas Coaches Leadership Program, an initiative focused on developing experienced assistants and emerging head coaches. He also participated in the TopConnect Basketball Symposium prior to the 2023-24 season.
Before joining App State, Smith spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Stephen F. Austin from 2021-23. The Lumberjacks captured a regular-season conference championship during his first season, while Smith primarily worked with the team's guards and wings and served as defensive coordinator.
During the 2022-23 season, Stephen F. Austin ranked among the nation's top 25 in several statistical categories, including turnovers forced, bench scoring, three-point percentage and steals. The Lumberjacks finished third nationally with 18.1 turnovers forced per game, eighth in bench points per game, 14th in three-point percentage and 15th in steals per game.
Smith spent the 2020-21 season as an assistant coach at Kennesaw State, where he helped the Owls assemble a nationally recognized recruiting class.
Prior to Kennesaw State, Smith served as Director of Men's Basketball Operations at Mississippi State. During his time in Starkville, the Bulldogs earned an NCAA Tournament berth, their first appearance in the tournament in 10 seasons.
Smith began his collegiate coaching career at UNC Charlotte, where he spent four seasons as Director of Basketball Operations before being promoted to assistant coach for the 2017-18 campaign. His time with the 49ers overlapped with UWF Associate Head Coach Patrick Corrigan, beginning a relationship that would later reunite the two in Pensacola.
Before entering the coaching profession, Smith was a standout guard at Clemson University. A four-year student-athlete for the Tigers, he totaled 986 points, 459 rebounds, 320 assists and 159 steals while helping Clemson earn three NCAA Tournament appearances. As a senior in 2011-12, Smith became the first player in Clemson history and the only ACC player that season to average at least 10 points, five rebounds and four assists per game. He finished his collegiate career shooting 42.9 percent from the field.
Following his career at Clemson, Smith played professionally overseas for two seasons, competing for Landstede Basketball in the Netherlands and MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg in Germany.
Off the court, Smith founded Tanner's Totes, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing care packages and support to children battling cancer. His work through the organization earned him recognition as an Atlanta Braves Community Hero in 2017.
A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Smith graduated from Clemson in 2012 with a bachelor's degree in marketing. He and his wife, Julia, have two sons - Stone and Steele.
