PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida volleyball team will play host to a pair of Gulf South Conference opponents this weekend at the
UWF Field House. West Florida will face West Alabama on Friday, Oct. 31 at 6 p.m. before playing North Alabama on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 4 p.m. The 2014 UWF senior class will be honored before the match on Friday while the team will recognize the student-athletes' parents on Saturday. The Argonauts will face Shorter on Tuesday, Nov. 4 at 6 p.m. CT.
ARGOS TAKE OVER SOLE POSSESSION OF SECOND PLACE IN GSCUWF defeated Gulf South Conference opponent Union (Tenn.) 3-2 (24-26, 25-18, 20-25, 25-22, 15-11) on the road last Saturday in a five-set thriller. West Florida (19-6, 12-3 GSC) took over sole possession of second place in the GSC with the win after Valdosta State lost to Christian Brothers on Saturday.
GSC TOURNAMENT LOOKING TO BE IN ROMEShorter currently ranks first in the Gulf South Conference with a 15-1 conference record with four regular season GSC matches remaining on the schedule. West Florida currently has a 12-3 record in the GSC with five conference matches remaining. The team with the best conference record at the end of the season will host the conference tournament with the top six teams competing. West Florida has played host to the GSC Tournament for the last six seasons.
KUHLMEIER NAMED GSC FRESHMAN OF THE WEEKUniversity of West Florida outside hitter
Katy Kuhlmeier was named the Gulf South Conference Volleyball Freshman of the Week. Kuhlmeier (Tallahassee, Fla./Lincoln HS) tallied a team-high 45 kills over a three-match stretch averaging 3.75 kills per set at an impressive .330 clip with only 10 errors off 106 swings. The freshman tallied 44 digs at 3.67 digs per set and also had nine blocks.
WEST FLORIDA RECEIVING VOTES IN AVCA TOP 25 POLLUWF received 41 votes in the latest AVCA D-II Top 25 poll that was released on Tuesday, Oct. 27. Unofficially, West Florida ranks No. 28 in the nation and is the only Gulf South Conference team to be receiving votes.
SCOTTY MOVES INTO FOURTH IN CAREER BLOCKSUWF senior middle
Sarah Scott moved into fourth place on the career blocks list at West Florida last weekend. Scott currently has 277 career blocks, and recently passed former teammate Abby Timmer (252; 2010-13). The senior needs 15 more blocks to pass former teammate, and current graduate assistant coach
Jenny Bellairs (291; 2010-13). Scott currently ranks third in the GSC in blocks per set (1.03).
