PENSACOLA, Fla. – The West Florida men's soccer team defeated Spring Hill College 3-2 Friday evening at the UWF Soccer Complexon senior day.
The Argonauts improve their record to 6-8-2 and 4-4-1 in the Gulf South Conference while the Badgers fall to 3-11 and 2-7 in the GSC.
"We dug a whole for us in the start of the match, but I thought we showed a different attitude than we have in recent games," UWF coach
Bill Elliott said. "The shift in attitude at halftime made the difference."
The Badgers took an early lead in the fourth minute, but UWF tied the game when
Tristan Rehrig (Oviedo, Fla./Oviedo HS) sent a cross to Jonathan Quintero (Port Saint Lucie, Fla./Eastern Florida State College) who headed it in to tie the game 1-1 in the 23rd minute.
SH took the lead before the half with a goal in the 36th minute to lead 2-1 at halftime.
The Argos regained momentum when
Pablo Paz (San Jose, Costa Rica/Virginia Commonwealth) converted a penalty kick in the 54th minute to tie the game, and then
Jorge Chirinos (Tampa, Fla./Dayton State College) gave UWF its first lead when he bent a goal from 20 yards out in the 69th minute.
With a 4-4-1 record in GSC play, the Argonauts will enter next week's conference tournament as the No. 5 seed. The Argos will face No. 4 seed Shorter (7-9-1, 5-4 GSC) on the road in a quarterfinal match at 5 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Nov. 4, and the advancing team will face No. 1 seed Christian Brothers in the GSC semifinals at Brosnaham Park in Pensacola on Friday, Nov. 7.
