PENSACOLA, Fla. – The West Florida women's soccer team defeated Valdosta State 2-1 Friday evening at the UWF Soccer Complexin a key Gulf South Conference match.
UWF is currently fifth in the GSC standings, but after winning Friday, the Argos could move up to No. 3 with a win Sunday at West Georgia.
"It was a big win in the conference," UWF coach
Joe Bartlinski said on senior day. "We're not settled. This goes a long way toward helping us host a home game next Tuesday (in the GSC Opening Round). That was an important win against one of the best teams in the conference.
"I was pleased with our seniors. I'm excited for them to get a win against a strong opponent in their last regular season home game."
UWF took an early lead when
Tricia Gould (Dunstable, England/Tyler JC) sent a pass to
Daryl Bell (Sarasota, Fla./SoutheastHS) who lobbed a shot over the keeper's head for the first goal of the game in the 13th minute.
The Argos added to their lead with a goal by
Svenja Burkhardt (Bad Salzuflen, Germany/Gymnasium Heepen) assisted by
April Syme(Mississauga, Ontario/Tyler JC) in the 74th minute, but VSU cut the lead in half with a goal three minutes later.
UWF travels to Carrolton, Ga. to play West Georgia in the regular-season finale Sunday, Nov. 2, at 1 p.m. ET.
