MOBILE, Ala. – The West Florida men's basketball team shot 69.8 percent from the floor to cruise to a 78-66 win at Spring Hill on Saturday. The Argonauts led by as many as 11 points in the first half, and they broke the game open in the second half to clinch their third straight win to open the 2014-15 season.
Five Argonauts scored in double digits to lead UWF. Lendward Griffin (Jacksonville, Fla.) had a strong overall game with 17 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Demetrius Moore (Paxton, Fla.) scored his third straight double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Justin Williams (Tallahassee, Fla.), Jason Laatsch (Birmingham, Ala.) and Deangelo Legrier (Orlando, Fla.) chipped in with 12, 11 and 10 points, respectively.
UWF started well and took the 11-point lead on a three-pointer by Griffin at the 4:32 mark. The Argos kept their momentum going into the second half, taking a 20-point lead on a layup by Legrier with 14:12 on the clock. Spring Hill came back to make things interesting, but the Argos held on for their second double-digit win in three games.
UWF finished the game 30-of-43 from the floor to shoot 69.8 percent, and they were also 5-of-10 from three-point territory. The Argos also won the rebound battle 35-24, and the team totaled six blocked shots, including three by Legrier.
"We played extremely well for the first 30 minutes, but we let up in the last 10 minutes," said UWF head coach Bob Stinnett. "We were still able to pick up the win on the road, but we definitely have some things to work on for the next game."
The Argonauts will be back in action in their home opener on Tuesday, Nov. 25, facing Spring Hill at the UWF Field House at 7 p.m.
