West Florida improves to 4-0 with 84-63 win against Spring Hill

Straughn leads UWF with 29 points and goes 7-10 behind the 3-point line

PENSACOLA, Fla.  – The University of West Florida men's basketball team improved its overall record to 4-0 after the Argonauts defeated Spring Hill College 84-63 at home. The Argos were led by Erin Straughn (Pensacola, Fla./East Caroline University) after he scored a game high 29 points and went 7-10 from 3-point range.

"We started off slow early on, but then we started clicking offensively," said head coach Bob Stinnett. "I thought we shot the ball well tonight but didn't rebound the ball tonight as well as we normally do and we gave up a lot of rebounds to our opponent."

West Florida had a slow start in the game quickly falling behind to the Badgers 10-2 five minutes into the first half. The Argos would respond to the early deficit and go on an 18-1 run in the next six minutes to take a 20-11 lead. UWF never looked back from there and held the lead for the rest of the game.

The Argos would have their biggest lead of the game with two minutes remaining when Demetrius Moore (Paxton, Fla./Indiana State University) extended their lead to 22. West Florida would eventually go on to win 84-63 after the final horn sounded and handed the Badgers their sixth loss of the season.

Straughn's seven three pointers in the game marks the most a student-athlete has made in one game since Peter Connole made six in 2012.

"I've just been spending a lot of time in the gym getting those shots up and working on my shots, but I have to credit my teammates tonight for getting it to me when I was open." said Erin Straughn.

Terrence Townes (Danville, Va./Gulf Coast State) added 16 points for UWF while junior Lendward Griffin (Jacksonville, Fla./Ribault HS) totaled 14 points and grabbed five rebounds. Sophomore Deangelo Legrier (Orlando, Fla./Edgewater HS) led UWF with seven rebounds while Jason Laatsch (Birmingham, Ala./Briarwood Christian School) led the Argos with seven assists and added seven points.

West Florida will play host to the UWF Thanksgiving Classic on Friday, Nov. 28-29 and will face non-conference opponents Claflin University and Chowan University.
