GAME NOTES: West Florida resumes conference play at home

Argos host Shorter Dec. 11 and Lee Dec. 13


PENSACOLA, Fla. - The University of West Florida men's basketball program will host its first Gulf South Conference opponents of the season this weekend. The Argonauts will face Shorter University Thursday, Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. CT and then Lee University Saturday, Dec. 13 at 4 p.m. CT.

The Shorter Hawks enter the weekend with a 5-3 (0-2 GSC) record and went 0-2 last weekend against GSC opponents Union (Tenn.) University and Christian Brothers University.

The Lee University Flames currently have a record of 6-1 (1-1 GSC) and defeated Union last weekend but fell to No. 24 CBU.
 
Around the GSC

Gulf South Conference men's basketball teams entered GSC play last week as three squads came away with two wins each; West Georgia, No. 22 Alabama Huntsville and No. 20 Christian Brothers. In a battle of undefeated league foes, UAH will travel to UWG on Sunday. The Wolves are sporting the best scoring offense in the GSC (93.7), while the Chargers have a league-best 61.5 scoring defense.

UWF's Demetrius Moore controls the boards with 10.0 rebounds-per-game and leads the GSC with 80 rebounds so far. He also has five double-doubles on the year.
 
UWF earns 79-77 overtime victory at UNA

The University of West Florida men's basketball team defeated the University of North Alabama 79-77 Saturday afternoon to earn their first Gulf South Conference win of the season. The Argonauts improve their record to 5-3 overall and 1-1 in the GSC.

In the first half, the Argos out shot their opponent 38 percent to 30 percent but entered halftime with a three point, 32-35, deficit against the Lions. UWF was led by senior Demetrius Moore (Paxton, Fla./Indiana State University) in the half who scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds in just 12 minutes.

Despite the three point first half deficit, West Florida picked up their first GSC victory after they outscored the Lions 45-42 in the second half and overtime periods. The Argos recorded a season high 50 rebounds in the win and dominated possession in the game by committing only nine turnovers, their lowest mark of the season.

West Florida was led by senior Terrence Townes (Danville, Va./Gulf Coast State) who tied a career high with 30 points. Moore recorded his fifth double-double of the season after he scored 20 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Junior Lendward Griffin(Jacksonville, Fla./ Ribault HS) also tallied a double-double after he scored 11 points and totaled 11 rebounds.
