PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida men's basketball team fell to Shorter University 81-68 Thursday night in a Gulf South Conference match-up at the UWF Field House. With the loss the Argonauts fall to 5-4 on the season and 1-2 in the GSC while the Hawks improve to 6-3 (1-2 GSC).
"We seem to play better on the road for some reason being 0-3 at home," said head coach
Bob Stinnett. "They just out played us, they out worked us tonight. We definitely have got to get better heading into Saturday."
In the first half, West Florida started off slow and fell behind quickly before entering halftime with a 32-42 deficit. Junior
Lendward Griffin (Jacksonville, Fla./Ribault HS) led UWF in the half with 10 points while the Argos shot 45 percent (14-31).
West Florida just couldn't overcome their GSC opponent in the second half and were outscored in the half 39-36. The Argos would eventually fell to the Hawks 81-68 with UWF shooting 44 percent (27-61) from the field while SU shot 45 percent (33-73). West Florida committed 19 turnovers in the game compared to Shorter who only made 11.
UWF was led by Griffin who scored 20 points while going 8-for-12 from the field while West Florida's next leading scorer was
Terrence Townes (Danville, Va./Gulf Coast State) who totaled 11 points. Senior
Erin Straughn (Pensacola, Fla./East Carolina University) scored nine points and led UWF with seven rebounds.
The Argonauts will continue conference play at home and will host Lee University Saturday, Dec. 13 at 4 p.m. CT.
