PENSACOLA, Fla. – The West Florida women's basketball team defeated Shorter 61-51 Thursday night at the UWF Field House.
The Argonauts (6-1, 3-0 GSC) remained undefeated in the Gulf South Conference despite a second-half comeback from Shorter (5-4, 1-2 GSC).
Brianna Williams (Minneapolis, Minn./North Dakota) led the Argos with 21 points, and
Katie Bobos (Lowell, Ind./Lowell HS) scored 13 with eight rebounds.
"Tonight was very challenging for us," UWF coach
Stephanie Lawrence Yelton said. "It's the middle of exam week, and we had one player who was still taking an exam at tip-off. So, we had a different starting lineup tonight. It was a good chance for some players to step up, and we did a good job of doing that."
UWF led 34-20 at the break, but Shorter came back to tie the game 47-47 with 9:05 remaining in the second half. But the Argos held the Hawks to just four points the rest of the game while finishing on a 14-4 run.
"We had a little scoring drought in the second half," Yelton said. "But we have a young team which is learning to battle through adversity. We were able to execute down the stretch. We were able to get to the free throw line and get on the boards again, and we were able to pull out the win."
UWF will host Lee in its final home game of 2014 Dec. 13 at 2 p.m.
